Good morning Neighbors,


The Oscar Mayer Special Area Plan is going through the public input process. The list of committees and dates is below. Sharing your feedback on the topics that matter to you during this process is very important. The committees and commissions collect public input at these meetings, and then make their recommendations based on your feedback.

Sharing your concerns during these committee meetings, or via emails to the commission, is the final opportunity for you, the community, to have your voices heard. I urge you to participate and be as involved as you can. I will also continue to always advocate for you, sharing your feedback and your voiced concerns.

I've added a brief description labeled "hot topic" to each commission date listed below to help you decide if you'd like to join the meeting (remotely) and provide feedback on those topics. Please note, these commissions are not limited to only discussing the topics highlighted below.

At this time, the committees and commissions listed are meeting remotely. Please stay tuned as the COVID-19 situation is everchanging and committees could move to in person when the situation improves. I will keep you posted. 


May 5th - Transportation Policy and Planning Board*

May 13th - Board of Park Commissioners

June 4th - Community Development Block Grant Committee 

  • Hot topic: Housing stock with the eye of equity and how working-class housing can be part of this plan


June 22nd - Sustainable Madison Committee 

  • Hot topic: Hartmeyer Wetlands Ecological System and soil contamination


June 25th - Housing Strategy Committee

  • Hot topic: Proposed housing zoning and density for the projects


June 29th - Plan Commission

  • Hot topic: Hartmeyer Wetlands Ecological System, Coolidge Street and on overall plan


July 14th - Common Council Meeting

Once the committees and commissions have collected and provided feedback, the updated plan will go back to the Common Council for final adoption.

New Council Leadership

On Tuesday, April 21st, Alder Sheri Carter was elected President of the Madison Common Council and I was elected Vice President. I am honored and humbled to be elected. Thank you to the alders who gave me their support, and to my constituents who motivate me every day to do more for our community. I will work hard to bring the Common Council together in policy making decisions, to listen to each other more, and to try to understand each other regardless of our differences, for the betterment of the city.

Thanks again to my constituents for supporting me. 




WHEDA announced their tax credit rewards for 2020; they awarded two out of three proposed affordable housing projects in District 12. 


  • MSP developer proposed a multifamily and senior housing, affordable housing project on Huxley Street next to the North Transfer Point; it was awarded tax credits from WHEDA. MSP are planning to move forward with construction next year. If you have questions about the project, please reach out to Mark Hammond at


  • Liberty Mortgage proposed senior housing project on 1825 & 1837 Aberg Avenue was also approved for WHEDA funding. Liberty Mortgage is planning to apply for the city affordable housing fund this fall. If you have questions about the project, please reach out to Alf G. McConnell at



3040 / 3046 Commercial Avenue & 709 McCormick Street


Greg Shimroski proposed a new two story, residential multifamily building project at 3040/3046 Commercial Avenue & 709 McCormick Street in the Eken Park Neighborhood. The developer attended several neighborhood association meetings and shared the design of the building and listened to residents' feedback. Yesterday, the design was approved by the Urban Design Commission. You can find this agenda being discussed at 3:36:36 here:

3040 / 3046 Commercial Avenue 

  • Maintain two existing single-family residences 
  • Add four new 8-unit apartment building 
  • Add new out-building for secure bicycle storage & small common fitness room
  • Add new private drive through site to provide access and service to the two existing single-family residences and the four new building


709 McCormick Street

  • Maintain two existing 16 units buildings
  • Replace existing single-family residence with a new 4-unit apartment building
  • Existing surface parking to remain and accommodate parking requirements
