Madison Public Market Site Design Workshop

Mark your calendars for a community workshop focused on the site design for the Madison Public Market. The workshop will take place on November 3 at 6:30pm in the Archipelago Village Design Center at 945 E. Washington Ave (parking and entrance in the rear of the building). 

As the City continues to make progress on implementation of the Public Market, this workshop will be an opportunity to discuss the site design and how the Public Market connects with surroundings amenities, natural features, properties, infrastructure, etc.

The City of Madison invites you to submit nominations for its annual JEFFREY CLAY ERLANGER CIVILITY IN PUBLIC DISCOURSE AWARD. The award honors Jeffrey Clay Erlanger, who was an individual of integrity, passion, intelligence, and civility. Jeff understood that thoughtful and caring people could have very different views on how to best address our community's many complex issues and problems. Jeff, who died on June 10, 2007, spent a significant part of his life committed to public service, focusing on constructive advocacy and civil debate, fairness, openness, and effective representation. He embraced the similarities that unite us.

Jeff served on the City of Madison's Economic Development Commission; he was chair of the Commission on People with Disabilities; chair of the Board of Directors of the Community Living Alliance; and ran for the Madison Common Council in 2002. He also held a number of other significant positions in the community. One of his greatest accomplishments was his successful push for the accessible taxicab service in Madison today.


The Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award recognizes City of Madison residents sharing Jeff Erlanger's dedication to, and passion for public policy development, civility, individual and human rights and who conduct their daily life consistent with these values

and who have had a significant impact on the Madison community.


  • Nominees must be an adult.
  • Nominees must be residents of the City of Madison whose work, program, project, policy ?decisions or actions have made a positive contribution to the community and its residents.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated leadership in public advocacy, focusing on constructive civil ?debate, fairness and openness resulting in effective outcomes.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated a dedication and commitment to treating people with civility, respect and dignity.
  • Nominees may have been compensated for their work, as long as they exemplify the values represented by the award.
  • Current members of the Common Council, the award committee, City staff and contractors with the City are not eligible to be nominated for the award.


Nominations should contain detailed information regarding the nominee sufficient to allow the award committee to determine that the candidate meets the award criteria. The award committee will not conduct additional research.

All nominations must be received no later than 4:30pm, on Tuesday, November 1, 2016.


A committee to select the award recipient has been appointed by the Mayor and is composed of five (5) individuals, including a member of, or representative of, the Erlanger family; a representative of the Mayor; the Common Council President; and two (2) citizen members. Citizen members are appointed to serve a two-year term with said term expiring two years from date of appointment.


The award is presented annually at a Common Council meeting close to the November 30 birthday of Jeff Erlanger. The 2016 award will be presented on November 22, 2016.

217 North First Street (house demolition)

City Engineering will be expanding the E. Johnson St. Bike Path in 2017. In preparation for this expansion we will be removing the residential structures (house and shed) at the address noted above. This property is the corner property at N. First and E. Johnson Streets.

Neighborhood residents receive this notice for the following reasons:

  • City Administrative Procedure 6-2 requires residents within 100 feet be notified due to tree removal. It ?has been determined that the existing trees would not survive the demolition and extensive re-grading of the site required for the future bike path, therefore all trees and shrubs will be removed according to the demolition plan. New trees and landscaping will be installed upon completion of the future bike path construction.
  • Traffic (vehicle, bike, and pedestrian) patterns and parking will be disrupted while this contract is being executed as indicated below. The Traffic Control Plan will be enforced between the hours of 9AM and 4PM on weekdays and between 7AM and 7PM on Saturdays as needed by the contractor.
  • The curb lane on E. Johnson St. will be narrowed to 2 lanes and a designated bike lane from First St. to approximately 100 feet beyond the Metro Bus stop.
  • The Metro Bus Stop will be temporarily relocated closed to Second Street.
  • Use of the sidewalk/existing bike path will be detoured onto First, Dayton, and Second Streets.
  • No changes will be made to the lanes on First Street.

Residents will notice increased parking of vehicles on Dayton and Second Streets. The contractor will be permitted to stage and overnight park vehicles and equipment. Employees of the contractor may also be parking personal vehicles while they are working on this contract.

As a safety precaution; please instruct children to stay away from this site until all work is completed and the temporary fencing has been removed. All parts of the structure will be completely removed before the hole left by the basement can be back filled and graded.

Work on this contract is anticipated to start on or about November 14, 2016 and is anticipated to be completed by December 16, 2016. Should you experience any problems during this period please do not hesitate to contact my project manager by phone or email.

$2000 Placemaking Grants

In an effort to activate and foster greater interaction within our neighborhoods, we will award three eligible neighborhood areas a $2000 grant. A city staff team will work with neighborhood residents to identify, design, and plan a project in a city park. You (and hopefully many of your neighbors) will sign-up your neighborhood upon arrival.

40+ Exhibits. Loads of useful information important to your neighborhoods will be on hand. Brag about your neighborhood! We have exhibit tables reserved to display neighborhood related activities, projects, and publications. Bring copies to share with others.
