District 12 July Update

July 22, 2019 5:34 PM

Greetings to all residents:

After three months on the City Council the experience has so far been incredibly rewarding. I am very grateful to be in the position as I continue to advocate for my constituents. Thank you for your support.

During my election campaign I discussed various topics. Among them were sustainability and affordable housing. I am working on several ordinance which are focused on improving our environment and sustainability.

Plastic Straw Ordinance

The ordinance I am working right now is the Distribution of Plastic Beverage Straws. This ordinance regulates the distribution of plastic beverage straws in the City of Madison.  Under this ordinance, restaurants shall be prohibited from providing plastic beverage straws to dine-in customers unless the dine-in customer specifically requests a plastic beverage straw. Under this ordinance, restaurants may still provide plastic beverage straws to Take-Out Customers, including those using a drive-thru window. We are continuing to work out the details of this ordinance and want to make sure we incorporate feedback from stakeholders. Please stay tuned for more information.

1212 Huxley Street, Senior and Multifamily Affordable Housing

A new affordable housing development project is coming to our Northside at 1212 Huxley Street, close to the Northside Transfer point. The project would be located at the current site of the Heritage Credit Union. MSP Real Estate has proposed to build a 111 units affordable housing project. Most of the proposed 111 apartments will be "affordable" (below market rate). This project will consist of senior housing and multifamily housing with 15 percent market rate housing. I am organizing a neighborhood meeting to get neighbors' input on the proposed project.

When: Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Time: 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Location: Warner Park Community Recreation Center - Community Room 1 -1 625 Northport Drive

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

2830 Dryden Drive Northside Town Center

Another update is on the 2830 Dryden Drive Northside Town Center project. The Bruns family has committed to developing a sustainable building design for a market rate 27-unit apartment building. Last month they gave a presentation of the design to the Urban Design Commission. The Bruns family is hoping to begin demolition of the existing building by the end of this summer, with a target to start construction in the fall.

6th Street Development Project on East Washington Neighborhood Meeting

Please join us for a second neighborhood meeting where the Movin' Out and Red Caboose development team will present architectural drawings for the revised project design to be located at 2340 Winnebago Street. The Property will be redeveloped to include a mixed-use building with Red Caboose Childcare on the first floor and 36 units of affordable housing above, managed by Movin' Out.

When: July 25, 2019

Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Location: Bashford United Methodist Church, Room 3

329 North Street

Looking forward to continuing to work with you all to improve our district and communities.
