District 13 Updates: Violence Prevention, Operating Budget, Halloween?

October 5, 2020 9:02 AM

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Here are some new updates.

Violence Prevention

Several of you have reached out to me asking what is being done about the increase in gun violence we experienced this summer.  Last week the City and County announced increased funding for a Violence Prevention Unit.

Also last week, the Mayor provided an update with a blog post entitled Reimagining Public Safety – Progress and Budget Priorities. Mayor Satya's post previews what to expect in her 2021 Executive Operating Budget which she is releasing tomorrow.

I've had preliminary conversations with MPD and community leaders about a D13 public forum on this topic. So far, it's been challenging finding a date that works, but I'll keep you posted.

2021 City Budgeting Process Continues

The Mayor will submit her Executive Operating Budget on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Common Council's consideration of the 2021 Executive Operating Budget will start at the Finance Committee meetings of Oct. 12 and 13 with Finance Committee amendments to the Operating Budget offered on Oct. 26. The Operating Budget, along with the Capital Budget, will be finalized on Nov. 10 - Nov 12. Both the Capital and Operating Budgets for each city department throughout the budgeting process can be accessed here.

Halloween Information

Many of you are wondering about Halloween, whether you should let your kiddos Trick or Treat.

Here is some Public Health guidance for Halloween and other information:

Walk-tober

Yesterday, the weather was so nice I took two long walks in Forest Hill Cemetery. The colors were amazing.

The City of Madison is promoting a new event, Walk-tober, to motivate people to get out and walk for transportation and for health during the month of October. Walking is a great way to boost physical and mental well-being while also being environmentally friendly.

Here is a guide to fall walking in Madison parks.

Electronics Recycling

Beginning this month and running through the fall season, Cascade Asset Management is accepting personal electronics for recycling and secure data destruction – read here.

Truman Olson

Last week, we wrapped up the neighborhood meetings for the Truman Olson project at 1402 S. Park St. This Wednesday, the project goes before Urban Design Commission for an informational presentation.

We've made a lot of progress in a year and a half. We were facing the prospect of losing the only full-service grocery store serving all of South Madison. We're now on track to break ground in the spring. Our goal was and is to avoid a gap in services, and that goal remains within reach.

Ideally, we will cut the ribbon on the new Luna's Grocery Store and turn out the lights at Pick N' Save on the very same day. That's my hope, that's been my dream, and that's what we're pushing for.

Lastly

There is simply a lot going on in our lives these days. People are on edge. We all have our days, with lots of ups and downs. And as we move into the cold winter months, it's likely to be even harder, and possibly more difficult than what we've experienced so far.

All the more reason to dip into those reservoirs of patience and kindness.

As an aside, teachers are really struggling right now with the demands of distance teaching. Consider reaching out with your love and support.

We can and will get through this together.

Be safe. Be well. Be kind.
