Glenway Golf Course

Yesterday's walk-through was well-attended. We learned about the restoration ecology approach that forms the backbone for the new course, modeled in part on the historic nature of links-style courses common to Ireland and Scotland, the part of the world where golf was invented centuries ago.  The end result will be a much larger portion of the course area restored to prairie and oak savannah -- which, in turn, means less mowing and less chemical treatments in the form of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.

I want to say thanks to all who attended, as well as a special thanks to Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp and Golf Operations Supervisor Theran Steindl, both of whom led the walk-through.  Also, I want to say thanks to Si Widstrand and Jens Jensen who also addressed questions regarding the ecological principles guiding the plans for the course.

The tree removal is nearly complete, save for the only two oaks that were targeted for removal. These two oaks near Glenway Dr. are diseased and for safety reasons need to come down. In other words, their removal is independent of the redevelopment of the course as a whole.

I've received assurances that should it be determined that any more trees need to be removed in the near term as part of this project, I would be notified, and every effort would be made to share this information with the public.

As it was stated yesterday, communication is important, particularly when changes of this magnitude are taking place. I remain confident these changes are for the better, and that they will lead to a much-improved Glenway Golf Course for decades to come.

City to Resume All On-Street Parking Restrictions June 1

Beginning June 1, 2021, the City of Madison will resume enforcement of all on-street parking restrictions, ending the temporary suspension of Residential Parking Permit restrictions and time limit restrictions in non-metered areas. With the expiration of Dane County Public Health orders and the lifting of capacity limits on June 2nd, there will be an increasing need to resume enforcement of the currently suspended restrictions.

Lastly, don't be left out. Get vaccinated and join the vast numbers of D13 residents who are poised to embrace the relaxed restrictions due to the public health order ending on June 2. The virus is still among us, and those who are immuno-compromised remain at risk, even once vaccinated. Let's continue to watch out for each other as we welcome the bright days ahead.
