Glenway Project Update, Meeting and Event Highlights

August 9, 2021 11:30 AM

Glenway Golf Course Update

The Glenway project is nearing completion of its initial phase. Most of the major construction work will be completed this week, with the focus shifting to remaining details including the overall grow in. Lots of good work has been done to prepare for native plantings.  If you have interest in participating in ecological restoration work along the lines of Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic, please contact Theran Steindl, Golf Operations Supervisor, tsteindl@cityofmadison.com.

As the project wraps up the larger construction phase, Parks has determined the clubhouse patio needs an upgrade to match the quality work being done of the course. To do so, six struggling pines will need to be removed.  Tree removal has been a controversial aspect of this project. However, I have visited the site and it's apparent several of the pines adjacent to the clubhouse are either dead or dying. In other words, in my judgment, this is a necessary step.  If you have questions, I encourage you to visit the site yourself.

Announcements, press releases, press conferences, etc.

On August 3, the CDC issued a new order extending the moratorium on evictions due to non-payment of rent for 60 days, through October 3. The Order is limited to counties with substantial or high rates of community transmission. Dane County is currently at a substantial rate of community transmission, so the extension currently applies here in Dane County.  In order to qualify for protection under the Order, you will have to have served a declaration upon your landlord attesting to a number of facts. The Tenant Resource Center has a declaration tool you can use to determine whether you are eligible and send a declaration to your landlord. You also need to apply for government assistance available to you. TRC is currently administering the Dane CORE program, which allocates federal emergency rent assistance funds, and you can apply online. Urban Triage is currently providing assistance to people in completing applications and will be administering rental assistance funds, as well, next month. That information is available at their website. There are several exceptions to the order that allow landlords to proceed with eviction for tenant misconduct or contract violations for reasons other than non-payment.

The Dane County Department of Human Services Immigration Affairs Office has put together some resources for undocumented people.  Visit the website to learn more.

The City of Madison launches Phase 1 of its new program, 20 is Plenty, on Monday, August 9. The program aims to improve safety on Madison's neighborhood streets, by lowering the speed limit on residential streets from 25 mph to 20 mph.  Read more here.

Lastly...

It's unsettling, to say the least, to be dealing with the Delta variant and facing the prospect of more variants to come. There remains so much disinformation across our country about the virus, how to best combat it, and about the vaccines themselves. Consequently, while we have high rates of vaccination in Dane County, we are nowhere near beating this.

I encourage any holdouts who are reading this to get vaccinated, provided your medical condition allows it. The Delta variant is highly transmissable even if vaccinated, so caution is in order. That means following CDC recommondations and guidelines, such as wearing masks when in public locations indoors.  I think it makes sense if you're going to be around a lot of people outdoors that you wear a mask as well.

Heck, they just canceled the New Orleans Jazz Fest, so that tells you something.

I'm aware this evokes a sort of collective PTSD, given how much we all endured this past year and a half. Nonetheless, we have no choice but to remember the lessons we've learned and continue to support each other, looking out in particular for the most vulnerable in our midst.

It's love that gets us through this.

I'll leave you with a link to a video for Jackson Browne's song, "A Human Touch", which is on his new album, Downhill From Everywhere.

Take Care and Stay Safe,
