Giving Tuesday, McGrath Proposal, Glenway Golf Course

November 30, 2021 10:51 AM

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a nice break with the long Thanksgiving weekend. The news of the Omicron variant no doubt caused some indigestion, casting a pall over our return to holiday gatherings with family and friends. I take to heart the words of the President not to panic, but rather continue to hope for the best, trusting in the efforts of the scientific community worldwide to address this most recent development. We've made it this far, with high rates of vaccination locally as well as compliance with the mask mandate, recently updated by Public Health until early next year.

In other words, we keep pressing on, encouraging one another and looking out for ways to help each other.

Speaking of which, today is Giving Tuesday. Please consider supporting one or more of the many worthy non-profits here in District 13!

Proposed E. Olin Redevelopment

McGrath Property Group has come back with a new proposal to redevelop the site at 232 & 222 E. Olin Ave, reducing the height from 18 stories to 12 stories while preserving the Wonder Bar. The 12-story structure would provide 258 housing units, 18,808 square feet of commercial space and 308 covered parking spaces.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 1, the Urban Design Commission will see an informational presentation on the proposal and provide initial feedback.  You can see the proposal materials, staff comments, and other materials for the UDC meeting here

Click here for information on how to watch the UDC proceedings and how to register for public comment.

Eventually, the proposal will be subject to full approval by UDC and Plan Commission. In the meantime, residents may learn more about the project by attending a virtual community meeting hosted by D14 Alder Sheri Carter on Wednesday, December 8, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. You may register in advance by clicking here.

Glenway Grounds Closed

I am happy to report that progress on the Glenway golf course renovation is on schedule and shaping up for a great community asset to open in the spring of 2022. The extensive work includes completely renovated and newly established greens and tees along with new native plantings of more than 28,000 prairie plugs and acres of dormant seeding. Now and throughout the winter and upcoming spring, the grounds are in a fragile and delicate state. Newly planted turf grasses and prairie planting remain susceptible to damage from winter weather, and more importantly the potential for damage caused by foot traffic and recreation.

Due to the sensitive grounds, and to ensure an on-time 2022 re-opening, the Glenway Park grounds are CLOSED to the public. This includes hiking, dog-walking, cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing.

I understand this is a popular destination for many during the winter months and thank you all for your patience, support and interest in the new site and look forward to seeing everyone enjoying outdoor recreation at Glenway in 2022.

See WINTER FUN for other locations in our many parks and natural areas.
