District 13 Updates

August 20, 2022 8:30 PM

Hi Everyone,

I'm leaving tomorrow for a short vacation on Washington Island, my first break since before the pandemic. I found a pet-friendly place to stay, so Bella will be coming with me. I won't be totally unplugged, but likely slower in my responses.

Here are this week's updates:

Barre3 at The Glen

Join Madison's barre3 and the Friends of Lake Wingra on fairway #1 at The Glen Golf Park for a heart-pumping, joy-filled workout, Tuesday, August 23rd from 7pm to 7:45. Connect with nature and learn about the Wingra Watershed and work of the Friends of Lake Wingra. To help celebrate the re-opening of The Glen Golf Park, and raise money for the Friends of Lake Wingra and the Madison Parks Foundation, donations are suggested but not required to attend.

WHEN TO ARRIVE: Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the event. New participants must complete barre3's online waiver and personal contact information form before the class.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Barre3 is a full-body balanced workout combining strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness that will leave you feeling balanced in body and empowered from within.

WHAT TO BRING: Bottled water, an exercise mat, and hand-held weights if you have them.

Events at The Glen are made possible through the Madison Parks Foundation, helping to conserve, promote, and enhance Madison's parks. Visit, Madison Parks Foundation, to learn more.

Meetings

The Common Council will not meet again until September 6, but many other committees meet the week of August 22, including the Sustainable Madison Committee, Water Utility Board, Community Services Committee and Disability Rights Commission. To see the full list of City meetings scheduled for this week, please consult the City meeting schedule.

Events

  • Orton Park Festival is happening August 25-28. This free event features local, regional, and national music, food and fun. Find more information here.
  • Movies with Madison Parks presents Encanto at Lisa Link Peace Park, 452 State Street, on Saturday, August 27, at 7:45pm. Find more information about this free event here, and be sure to check out the Parks Division Event Calendar for more fun activities in parks around Madison.
  • Dane Dances! 2022 "A Season of Celebration" Dane Dances! is a family friendly event on the stunning Monona Terrace rooftop EVERY FRIDAY EVENING IN AUGUST. The much-anticipated summer music series is a great way to get down and dance with your friends, coworkers, or family. The rooftop gets shaking as the sun sets against the iconic Wisconsin State Capitol with the breeze of Lake Monona at your back while you dance. Feel free to bring a blanket, chair and picnic basket; seating on the rooftop is limited. Sorry, carry-in alcohol is prohibited. Dane Dances! promotes inclusivity with a fun night of music and dancing to music and bands for all ages.
  • Luna's Block Party takes place on Saturday, August 20, 1pm-9pm, at Luna's Groceries, 2010 Red Arrow Trail. Bring the family and have some fun!

Announcements

  • The Common Council Office is hiring a Community Engagement Specialist. If you have a passion for communications and public service, you might be just who we're looking for! Learn more about this exciting opportunity.
  • The final candidates for the Independent Police Monitor position are Robert Copley, Rodney Saunders Jr., John Tate II, and Joel Winnig. The finalists were introduced at a virtual event on August 18. The candidates had the opportunity to answer questions from members of the Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB). Recordings of the candidate forum and the finalists' Oral Board interviews are available on the Office of Independent Monitor website. Provide feedback on the finalists to the PCOB in a survey, also available on the Office of Independent Monitor website. The feedback survey will be open until 11:59pm on Tuesday, August 23. The Police Civilian Oversight Board plans to conduct a final interview of the four final candidates, deliberate, and make a hiring decision in closed session at its August 25 meeting.

Lastly...

I'm so grateful we can enjoy this beautiful weather. Even so, I can't help but be mindful of the severe climate events that are taking place across the globe. Addressing climate change is all of our responsibility, which is one reason I'm supportive of the steps forward the City is taking with respect to transit.

Transit-Oriented Development is not a new concept; TOD was referenced in the City's 2008 Comprehensive Plan, and was even more clearly articulated in our most recent 2018 Comp Plan. We are a growing city, and as such it behooves us to manage that growth in a manner that enhances alternatives modes of transportation. We do this by creating housing density along high-frequency transit routes and building complete streets that ensure bike and pedestrian safety.

Accordingly,  I am working with staff to hold a district-wide information session about TOD sometime in September. Stay tuned for details.

Take good care and stay safe,
