District 13 Updates: Summit Recap, 1224 South Park, Annie Stewart Fountain

November 21, 2020 5:44 PM

Hi Everyone,

Public Safety Summit Recap

Thursday evening District 14 Alder Sheri Carter and I hosted the Public Safety Summit. It was powerful evening with lots of great content from our distinguished panel consisting of Judge Everett Mitchell, Anthony Cooper, Aurielle Smith, Kaleem Caire and Brandi Grayson.

The event was held on Zoom and we now have the recording for those who were not able to attend.

Here is the link to the recording:

At the end of the two-hour session, the discussion turned to the important subject of how to improve police-community relations.  There is room for progress, and it starts with radical listening, as Brandi Grayson of Urban Triage so eloquently stated near the end of the Summit.  South District Captain Mike Hanson has shared with me his interest in exploring this further.  Next steps include making sure the important work of non-profits like Urban Triage, One City Schools, and Focused Interruption Coalition are embraced within the revitalized Violence Prevention Unit within Public Health.

1224 South Park

The proposed development for 1224 South Park Street by Prime Urban Properties goes before Plan Commission on Monday, November 23, 5:30 pm.  The meeting will be held online.  Click here for links to the agenda and for instructions as to how to watch the meeting online.  You may register for public comment by clicking here.  In order to speak at the meeting, you must register in advance.

There are two other D13 items of the agenda, both demolitions, one on Leonard Street and the other on South Shore.

You may send comments on any Plan Commission agenda item by emailing  Please feel free to email me as well at

Annie Stewart Fountain

I'll be hosting a Zoom meeting with City Arts Administrator Karin Wolf and Greenbush resident Jim Lorman on Tuesday, November 24 at 6:30 PM.  Since Parks is not including the fountain in the Vilas Park Master Plan, Karin has picked up for the mantle for the City and Jim has agreed to help on a neighborhood level.

As Jim wrote recently wrote on the Greenbush listserv:

There are a whole host of issues to decide, including: what sorts of protection & restoration should be undertaken; whether the marble stature (at the top of the fountain) should continue to be exposed to the elements, both in the short and long term; where the best long-term location is for various elements of the fountain; what any actions might cost; where funds might come from; and how all these and other decisions can best be made.

The hope is this will be the first of a series of monthly meetings.

Here is the invite:
