Hi Friends and Neighbors,

Good Neighbor Gathering - September 25th

The District 13 Neighborhood Alliance invites you to a free, safe, outdoor, alcohol-free, family-friendly event--the 2nd annual Madison Good Neighbor Gathering on Saturday, September 25th from 12noon to 5PM at Brittingham Park!

  • Madison's Panchromatic Steel drum band & DJ Andre
  • Inflatable slide
  • Monroe Street Art Center activities
  • MSCR Fit2Go van
  • Madison West Poms team, Reggie the Regent,
  • Bike parade, food carts, free beverages, and more!

To keep this event free and open to all, the Alliance is seeking donations from local businesses and residents--please visit their website to support it. Contact the Alliance at to learn more.

District 13 is made up of the Dudgeon-Monroe, Vilas, Greenbush, Bay Creek, Bayview, Triangle, and Monona Bay neighborhoods, and the Alliance works to increase a sense of community and mutual support across all our neighborhoods.

Brush and Fall Yard Waste Collection Schedules

Brush collection is ending and may have ended already for your street. Find more info here.  Yard waste collection schedules have been published, which you can access here.

The leaves are beginning to fall and our lakes need your help to remove them.

When leaves are left in the street during rainfall, they create "leaf tea", which is one of the worst sources of active phosphorus pollution in our lakes.   Rain washes the abundant nutrients into our beloved lakes, where it causes excessive algae and weed growth.  All the rain that falls on streets in the Dudgeon Monroe, Vilas, and Greenbush neighborhoods runs into Lake Wingra. Similarly, run-off from rainfall on the streets in Bay Creek and Monona Bay neighborhoods wash into Monona Bay.

We are asking for your assistance. In addition to properly disposing of your own yard waste, please pledge to keep the leaves in front of your property off of the streets and gutters.   Don't wait for a street cleaner to remove them - if you see leaves in the street, broom or rake the leaves off the street onto the grass for later collection.

Remember, just one pound of phosphorous from decomposing leaves can generate 500 pounds of lake weeds!

Please visit this website to learn your City leaf collection dates and how to prepare your yard waste. And sign up for a rain alert to remind you to get your leaves out of the street prior to a downpour by clicking here.

Gun Violence Reduction Strategy

See the Mayor's recent post about the City's strategy to reduce gun violence. I'm hopeful the Mayor's operating budget will allocate sufficient funds to Public Health to ramp up the City's efforts by implementing a comprehensive Gun Violence Reduction Strategy.  This will need to be a joint effort with the County to implement data-driven, evidence-based strategies that have worked in cities acrross the country.

Here is a link to a short video outlining the success of this approach in Oakland, CA.

Public Information Meetings

The John Nolen Drive reconstruction project is having a public information meeting on Oct 4 at 6:30 pm. Pre-registration is required. For more information about the meeting and how to register, click here.

The City is planning to reconstruct Cedar Street and Beld Street in 2022. The City is also planning to construct a new block of Cedar Street (Fish Hatchery Road to South Street).  The City scheduled a virtual public information meeting for 6:30 p.m., Sept. 28, via Zoom to discuss the planned construction project. Registration prior is required. Click here to register.

That's all for now.

Take care and be safe.
