Snow Plow Update

With another major winter storm bearing down on Madison, the Streets Division stands ready to respond.
When the storm begins this evening, thirty-four plow trucks will be deployed.  Thirty-two trucks will plow and salt the salt route networks of Madison. These are the main thoroughfares, Madison Metro routes, and the roads around schools and hospitals. The remaining two trucks will work applying sand to hills, curves, and intersections that may need this material.  These trucks will remain on these routes until morning.
Commuting through this storm tonight will be very difficult, and the Tuesday morning commute will also be slow and challenging.
For tonight, forecasts predict that this storm will produce high winds and heavy snow during the overnight hours. This can produce visibility issues and blowing or drifting snow concerns, especially in outlying areas of Madison.  If you must be on the roads tonight, please exercise great caution.
For tomorrow morning, all roadway users should expect to encounter slippery roads covered with multiple inches of snow throughout Madison. And the storm may still be active.  Those who must commute through the city on Tuesday are encouraged to make good choices. Allow for ample commuting time in order to arrive at your destinations safely.  Allow for plenty of stopping distance at intersections and behind vehicles.  Also, as with all winter storms, please be slow, patient, and alert on the roads.
While it is likely that this storm will trigger a citywide plowing event, Streets Division staff has not determined the start time of this operation. Citywide plowing operations begin when the storm is at or near its end and there are three or more inches of snow accumulated on the roadway. When citywide plowing operations begin, another update will be provided.
As of Monday evening, refuse and recycling services for those with a Tuesday collection are planned to occur as scheduled.  Residents in the Tuesday collection district should place their carts out for pickup. If a suspension of collection services becomes necessary, the Streets Division will announce it Tuesday morning.
Streets Division staff will continue monitoring the roads and the weather. Future updates will be provided as conditions change.
