Snow Update and Halloween Kiddos Alert

October 31, 2019 2:46 PM

SNOW plowStreet Division Snow Update:

Roads in Madison remain slippery in spots and all roadway users are encouraged to be cautious today and on their commute home this evening. The Streets Division will be keeping plow trucks on the roads throughout the day and into the night in response to the storm.

Streets Division crews began plowing and salting the main thoroughfares of Madison around midnight, and their work continues.

The snow today was wet, much like a typical April snow. And when the storm began, pavement temperatures were above freezing, which created some melting. As the storm intensified, these two conditions created some wet and slick roadways, particularly on unsalted neighborhood streets.

While the main thoroughfares of Madison are likely to be in good winter driving condition by the time of the Thursday evening commute, roadway users may yet encounter slippery areas, so everyone must drive cautiously and alertly.

After the salt routes are in good condition, crews will transition to plowing bus pads and city-maintained sidewalks before moving onto a sanding operation for neighborhood streets. Neighborhood sanding is not likely to begin until close to midnight, after this evening's trick-or-treating festivities have concluded. Sand is used on neighborhood streets to provide additional traction to roadway users.

The sand will aid the Friday morning commute through residential areas, but people on the road in the morning should plan on potentially encountering some slippery areas as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing overnight tonight. Be sure to plan for extra travel time.

As always, make good choices. Drive slow. Stay alert. And be patient.

Streets Division staff will continue monitoring conditions and operations will adjust as needed.
