2020 Census
We need everyone to be counted in the 2020 census
The US Census Bureau field workers will be in South Madison (from St. Mary's Hospital to Rimrock Road) this weekend starting Saturday, August 22 thru Sunday, August 23, 2020 from 9:00 am thru dusk. The census count impacts funding for a wide range of programs for affordable housing, transportation, education, child care, health care, and other important aspects of a safe and healthy community. It is crucial that everyone including children be counted so our community can receive our fair share of federal funding.
Tenants/homeowners who do not speak the same language as the census taker can request a return visit from a census taker who does speak the same language. If no one is home when the census taker visits, the census taker will leave a notice of their visit with information about how to respond to the census online or by phone. People who have not yet responded should do so now if they prefer to avoid having a census taker knock on their door. Census takers will wear masks and follow local and state public health guidelines. Census takers will be carrying an ID badge with their photo, a US Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. They may also be carrying a Census Bureau bag and other Census Bureau gear. Households who do not self-respond or answer the door will likely get follow-up visits from a census taker. There is a summary of this information available on the 2020 Census website.
Here is a preview of the questions included in the 2020 Census, and should be filled out for everyone including children living in the household:
- Age: What is this person's age and what is this person's date of birth?
- Hispanic Origin: Is this person of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin?
- Race: What is this person's race?
- Relationship (for people in the household who are not filling out the information): How is this person related to Person 1?
- Sex: What is this person's sex?
- Tenure (Owner/Renter): Is this house, apartment, or mobile home owned with a mortgage, owned without a mortgage, rented, or occupied without payment of rent?
- How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment, or mobile home on April 1, 2020?
- What are the first and last names of the people living here?
- Were there any additional people staying here on April 1, 2020 that you did not include in Question 1?
Census responses are confidential and protected by law – no personal information can be shared with anyone outside of the Census Bureau. There are no questions about citizenship or immigration status on the 2020 Census.
