Snow Plowing Update

snowStrong winds, light snow, and cold temperatures may arrive in the night. Streets Division crews stand ready to respond. Morning commuters should prepare for slow and patient travels for the days ahead.

When the snows begin to stick to the roads, crews will be dispatched to the main thoroughfares to treat them as conditions allow.

Wind gusts may be as high as 40 miles per hour. This will create blowing and drifting snow for the roadways along open areas, like those along open fields on Madison's far west and east sides, and also along the roads that border the lakes. Roads and sidewalks in these open areas are likely to become covered, and then covered with snow again, due to the wind.

The storm is not expected to produce much snow depth, but the wind is likely create difficult conditions overnight and on through the Wednesday morning commute.

Temperatures overnight are also expected to drop to the point where it is too cold for Madison's road salt to be effective.  You should expect to encounter snow-covered and slippery roads.

The frigid temperatures are expected to last until the weekend, too. This means if the snows arrive as predicted, it will linger on all Madison roads, including the main thoroughfares, until temperatures warm.

All roadway users must continue to make good choices in the days ahead. Plan for extra travel time so you can arrive at your destinations safely.  Remember to allow plenty of space to stop and make turns. And in general stay alert and be cautious.

Streets Division staff will to monitor the roads and the weather. Future updated will be provided as operations change.
