Snow Plowing Update

January 18, 2023 1:16 PM

Another wet and dense snowstorm is due to hit Madison this evening that will make roads slushy and slippery tonight and tomorrow morning.  Streets Division crews will be out and roadway users must use caution.

Forecasts show the storm will arrive this evening (Wednesday, January 18) and last through the night.  The storm is expected to intensify shortly before the Thursday morning commute before finally tapering off sometime later in the afternoon.

When the storm begins, the Streets Division will deploy 32 crews to plow and salt the main thoroughfares as needed.  Crews will remain on these routes for the duration of the storm with additional personnel coming on at midnight to apply sand for traction to the hills, curves, and intersections that are not part of the salt route network of streets.

You should anticipate slippery, slushy, and snowy travel through Madison tonight and again for the Thursday morning commute – especially in untreated residential areas. This will be the third storm this winter where we've had relatively warm pavement temperatures combined with such a dense snow.   These weather conditions make very wet and slick roadways as this high-moisture content snow melts as it hits the pavement only to have more snow fall on top of it and making things slushy. Plus, forecasts are also calling for a slight chance for freezing rain mixed with the snow, which will also contribute to slippery conditions if that occurs.

You must make good choices when planning your travels if you must be out during the storm.

  • Be slow and Be patient.
  • Stay alert.
  • Anticipate your stops and turns so you do not slide.
  • Leave for your destinations early so you can arrive safely and on time.
