Property Assessment vs Property Tax

I received some questions from constituents regarding the assessment notices that were recently published, wondering how this will impact their taxes. It's not uncommon for people to worry that the increase in their assessed property value will lead to a corresponding increase in next year's tax bill. I asked our Finance Director to help show the difference and he provided the graph above.

The blue line is the average home value in Madison and the orange is the taxes on the average home in Madison. As you can see, the annual increase in city property tax levied against the average home has generally been between 2-4%, while the increase in assessed property value has ranged much more widely, from 8% increases per year in the early 2000s, to an annual decrease in value from 2010-14. This graph also doesn't show the average taxes from the other local taxing authorities (Madison Metropolitan School District, Dane County, and Madison College) which are all included on the tax bill sent to property owners each year.

Transit Public Hearing at TPPB

On Tuesday, the Transportation Policy & Planning Board will hold a public hearing at 6pm on the proposed network redesign. People interested in providing feedback are encouraged to attend the hearing or submit comments ahead of time by filling out an online form at mymetrobus.com/feedback, emailing mymetrobus@cityofmadison.com or calling (608) 266-4466. The Transportation Policy & Planning Board will vote on a recommendation at their June 6th meeting which will then be taken up by the Common Council on Tuesday, June 7th. The plan as adopted by the Common Council is expected to go into effect in June of 2023. You can find more details on the redesign effort including links to provide comment here
