Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted January 30, 2017 8:47 AM
Another helping of snow is expected to start falling around noon and continue through the night. This means it may be actively snowing during the evening commute, which could produce slippery patches. All roadway users should plan for slow and safe travel for the way back home today after work. Remember to keep making good choices on the roads and stay alert. Brake early and give the plow drivers that will be out there plenty of space to do their work.

The Streets Division will deploy 32 crews to maintain the salt routes once the storm begins, and will keep 32 crews on these main streets through the evening and during the overnight hours as well so these roads are ready for Tuesday morning. Even though temperatures started bitterly cold Monday morning, they will increase through the day and warm to the point where we will be able to apply salt to the roads. When temperatures are below 15 degrees, the Streets Division will not apply salt as it would prove ineffective in helping road conditions.

Since it is expected to be actively snowing during the evening commute, driving conditions could prove to be a bit challenging. Work performed by the salt route crews get covered over when it is actively snowing, and the roads will remain snow covered until the truck can loop through that portion of their route again. This means all roadway users may encounter slippery segments and they should therefore remain cautious and slow when traveling later today. Also note that since crews will be working on the salt routes, which are the critical transportation arteries of Madison, residential areas may become slippery. And finally, when planning your Tuesday morning commute, be sure to give yourself extra time to get to your destinations so you can be slow, cautious, and safe on your way through the city.

The Streets Division will be monitoring the roads throughout the storm. As always, a citywide plowing will not commence until there are three or more inches of snow on the roads and the storm is at or near its end. If conditions change, our operations will adjust, and future updates will be provided.
