Prevention: Theft from Auto

February 11, 2016 2:38 PM

In the past few weeks, I have received a couple of phone calls/emails and seen a variety of posts on social media concerning threft from cars.  I am working to schedule a district meeting to talk about this issue, with Madison Police.  I will be back in touch with more information in the near future.

In the meantime, I have worked with MPD to write up a good summary of things that can be done to deter theft or if  you are a victim of crime what to do.  I can't emphasize enough the importance of contacting MPD if you are a victim of crime.

Your Alder,

One theory of crime is the Routine Activity Theory, which suggests crime occurs when a motivated offender, suitable target and the lack of a capable guardian converge at the same place.  More simply, criminals often choose, or find their targets within the context of their routine activities, such a travelling to and from work or other activities, and tend not to go too far out of their way to commit crimes.

Some things we can do to prevent crimes from occurring or catch suspects is by talking with our neighbors.  One crime prevention technique is to know the eight people around you.  If you know the three people across the street from you, the neighbor on each side of your house, and the three houses behind you.  If each resident did this, we might realize when someone or something is out of place.

Talk with your children and teens; they also know who is moving in a neighborhood.  When children and teens commit crimes they will often brag to show off their catch!

Other Best Practices for Preventing Theft......

  • Park in a garage or a close as you can to your house.
  • Remove your keys, close your windows and lock your doors, even in your garage.
  • Keep the garage door opener out of sight if the car is parked in driveway or on the street in front of the house.
  • Take all of your valuables out of your vehicle-including items that appear they might have valuables in them (ex. gym bags or school back-packs), especially at home.
  • If you cannot remove items from the vehicle, try not leave them in view.
  • Park in well-lit areas and in high-visible areas.

If you are a victim, please report it through the use of a self-report form. MPD uses crime data analysis to see where the crime trends are occurring throughout the city.  This information can be used to direct officer patrol, when they are not on another call.

How to File a Report with MPD from Your Computer:

Tips before starting your Self-Report:

  • Have your registration paperwork with you.
  • Have serial numbers for any stolen items.
  • Have estimated values for stolen items.
  • Provide good descriptors of stolen items (ex. make, model, and color).
  • Feel free to take pictures of damage as it can be added to the report later, if necessary.
