Information from Streets Division Regarding Snow Emergency
From the City of Madison Streets Division:
Snow Emergency Continues Until 7 a.m. Thursday, January 24
A snow emergency remains in effect for the entire City of Madison until 7 a.m. Thursday, January 24.
Alternate side parking restrictions are in effect again tonight for the entire city of Madison, including the Snow Emergency Zone.
The Streets Division asks that people choose off-street parking options for their vehicles again this evening, especially those within the Snow Emergency Zone. If an off-street parking option is not available, you must abide by alternate side parking rules.
Streets Division crews will be working throughout the night to plow areas that had been blocked by parked cars during the daytime plowing operations.
Streets Division staff will assess road conditions on Thursday, January 24 to determine if the snow emergency will be extended to a third evening.
Parking on the Street Tonight (Wednesday, January 23 into the early morning of Thursday, January 24)
Vehicles parked on the street tonight (the evening on January 23 into the early morning of January 24) should be on the EVEN house-numbered side of the street between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Violations of the alternate side parking rules are punishable by a fine of $60 throughout the entire City of Madison.
Violators of the alternate side parking restrictions on the below listed areas within the Snow Emergency Zone will be ticketed and towed.
300 block of S Hamilton St.
W Doty St. (all)
100 - 300 blocks and 700-800 blocks of W. Washington Ave.
300 - 600 blocks of W Mifflin St.
10 N Bedford to 300 S Bedford St.
10 - 200 blocks of W. Gilman St
300 - 500 blocks of N Carroll St
300 – 600 blocks of N Henry St.
200, 300, and 500 blocks of Wisconsin Ave.
200 – 10 blocks of N. Baldwin St.
200 – 500 blocks of E. Mifflin St.
100 – 300 blocks of N Hamilton St.
N. Hancock St. (all)
S. Hancock St. (all)
N. Franklin St. (all)
S. Franklin St. (all)
N. Blair St. (all)
E. Johnson St. (from Blair to Baldwin)
Violators outside of these areas are also subject to towing.
If a vehicle is towed, an additional towing fee will be added to the parking ticket.
Other Parking Information
Residents are reminded that all daytime parking restrictions will be enforced. That includes restrictions that ban parking on selected blocks in the downtown area and on the near east and near west sides. Parkers should pay attention to all parking signs.
Parking will be available in the cashiered sections of city-owned ramps in the downtown area. During a declared snow emergency you can park for no charge at the City ramps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. If you enter before 9 p.m. or leave after 7 a.m. you are liable for any parking charges before 9 p.m. and from 7 a.m. until the time you leave.
When parking in the ramps overnight, do not park on the top level so this area can be plowed. Be aware that vehicles stored in city ramps longer than 48 hours are subject to being ticketed and towed. Meters in lots and ramps are enforced 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Parking is also available at the Brittingham Park Shelter parking lot off of W. Washington Ave.
Update on Plowing Operations
Streets Division crews along with heavy equipment contractors will be working through the day on January 23 to plow all city roadways. Citywide plowing operations began in the early morning hours of the 23rd and will last through the night. Plowing operations will take 14 to 16 hours until all city streets have received their initial plowing.
Streets Division crews will also continue to both plow and salt the designated salt routes as the snow continues to fall throughout the day. Crews will remain on the salt routes until conditions allow for these vehicles to rotate into the residential areas to assist with the residential street plowing effort.
Plowing operations will last through the day and night, including the second night of snow emergency plowing where crews will work to clear the areas blocked by parked cars the previous evening.
All those who must be on the roads today should exercise great caution. The roads will be snow covered and slippery throughout the entire city for much of the day, including designated salt routes. With cold temperatures, the salt spread on the salt routes will work more slowly. Plus, with it actively snowing any work performed by plows this morning will be covered over again.
If you choose to use the roads today, be sure to be cautious, patient, and alert. And also be slow. You must allow for extra stopping distance and extra travel time in order to arrive at your destinations safely. As always with challenging winter weather, make good choices if you need to make your way through the city today.
Since citywide plowing operations will be occurring during the day, individuals may encounter plowing equipment doing their work. Remember to allow plow drivers plenty of place for them to do their work. Plow vehicles are not as nimble as passenger vehicles, so do not tailgate them or cut them off.
More Information
Additional information about winter plowing and parking can be found on the city of Madison winter website, www.cityofmadison.com/winter. Parking information can also be heard by calling the winter parking hotline at 608-261-9111.
