Earlier today I contacted the City of Madison Streets Division regarding snow piles on the median on Siggelkow Road which are impeding driver visibility and causing hazardous driving conditions.  Depending on the location along Siggelkow, Madison or Village of McFarland crews will be working to remove the snow and improve visibility and safety.  If you are experiencing a similar issue in your neighborhood, please send me an email at

I have also received reports of mailboxes sustaining damage during the plowing operations in areas where a contractor was responsible for plowing.  I have contacted the City of Madison Streets Division Superintendent and shared information with him.  I should have more to report in a day or two.  If your mailbox was damaged, please go to to file a claim and send me an email at

On another note, the City is taking extraordinary measures to ensure the safety of employees, residents, and guests the next two days. All non-essential City services will be shut down and closed to the public Wednesday, January 30 and Thursday, January 31.

Madison Metro Transit will be in service with some limitations. Please check to determine which routes are in operation.  Police and Fire will be working, as will Public Works employees as they keep streets, sidewalks and bike paths cleared and provide residents with safe drinking water.  Staff throughout the City will be monitoring phones and returning calls as needed.

City Engineering staff also asked that the following information be shared:

Temperatures are expected to be well below zero most of this week. By the weekend, temperatures are expected to rapidly climb into mid- to high- 30s. Depending on exactly how high the temperatures climb, we may see significant snow melt. We are also seeing the possibility of rain in the forecast. Combined, we could have a lot of water on the ground. This could lead to localized street flooding due to storm sewer inlets covered in snow and ice.

Today (Tuesday), City staff began removing snow from inlets at known low points to minimize the chance of flooding. However, there are almost 20,000 inlets in the City's storm sewer system. If you are able, please  "adopt" storm inlets adjacent to your property and help keep them clear of snow and ice. Every inlet helps provide someplace for water to go.
