Alder Tierney’s Updates

The chips are down or will be

July 13, 2019 9:40 PM

The City of Madison is in the process of chip sealing streets in many areas of my district and elsewhere in the City. This is not resurfacing.  Chip sealing is done because it saves taxpayers millions of dollars over the long term and extends the life of streets by decades.  Presently, chip sealing costs $1.50 per square yard.  This is in contrast to a thin overlay costing $15, resurfacing costing $25-$30, and reconstruction costing $60 to $70.

The following website has a description of the chip sealing process and a map of the City of Madison with streets highlighted that are undergoing chip sealing in 2019.

The chip sealing process takes a couple of weeks to complete.  After the materials are applied, traffic compacts the chips and then the streets are swept a day or so after the initial application. About a week or so after the first pass of the sweeper, another pass is made to pick-up additional material that was not compacted into the roadway.

Notification of when specific streets are to be chip sealed is made via signs posted along the streets.

Chip sealing is messy no doubt.  However, sealing streets to prevent water infiltration is critical to prevent the development of pot holes during freeze/thaw cycles.
