Alder Tierney’s Updates

Covid 19 and other updates

Covid 19

Thank you to all our friends, family members and neighbors who work in health care occupations for their tireless work in the fight against Covid 19 and for continuing to provide the most exceptional medical care for their patients possible under circumstances that no one has experienced before.

We will beat Covid 19.  The key is to obey the directives of our public health professionals and stay up-to-date on what is happening in our community and state.

Residents of the City of Madison can find up-to-date information here:

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has a Covid 19 website that provides up-to-date information:

Take some time to complete the Census online

Like many others, I received a mailing from the US Census this last week with instructions for completing the Census online.  If you cannot complete the census online, a form will be mailed to you.  Please complete the census using either option so that we can dramatically reduce the need to have census workers out in our community gathering this information.

Kids can also learn more about the census and turn it into an at-home civics lesson by visiting

Please go online to  and request an absentee ballot for the April election.  You can also request your absentee ballot for the August and November elections as well.

This week I requested my absentee ballot online in less than 2 minutes – including the amount of time it took for me to snap a photo of my driver's license and upload it to the website.

If you are not registered to vote at present, on Friday we received good news that the period for online registration has been ordered to be extended and you will be able to register online again soon.

If you know people who do not have access to the internet, they can now go to the City-County Building on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and take advantage of curbside voting.  Staff from the City Clerks office will come out to their car and assist them with voting and registering, if needed.

In order to protect vulnerable populations, the location of many polling places is being changed for the upcoming election.  The City Clerk is coordinating with Planning Division staff to arrange new locations.  This is a significant undertaking to accomplish prior to the April 7 election.  Please be patient as this is work in progress and new polling location information will be shared as soon as possible.

For residents of the 16th Aldermanic District who presently vote at Westminster Senior Apartments, I can confirm that this is a current polling location the Clerk is working to change.

I want to thank City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl for her efforts and the efforts of her staff to make these changes.  Prior to any election, everyone in the office of the City Clerk works exceptionally long hours to make Election Day run as smoothly as possible.  Their work in preparing for this election has gone above and beyond.

Again, I join others in strongly encouraging you to vote by absentee or by using curbside voting prior to election day.

Madison Water Utility exempting late payment fees until further notice

From the Madison Water Utility:

In response to the growing COVID-19 outbreak, Madison Water Utility will be exempting late payment fees until further notice. We recognize that for many of our customers, this is a time of enormous personal and financial stress, so we are working to do what we can to minimize that stress in the days and weeks ahead.

We ask that customers who are still able to pay their Municipal Services Bill on time please continue to do so. Our customer service staff is here to help if you have any questions:

Madison Water Utility never disconnects customers for late payments.

Let's all reduce the burden on Madison Police, Fire and EMS

This is a difficult time for our first responders and health care professionals.  Let's all do our part to help them focus where the need is greatest.

Drive at the speed limit and take care at intersections.   Our hospitals are dealing with enough right now and simply do not need to deal with traffic accident injuries that could be prevented if people simply drove the speed limit and drove with care.  Our law enforcement officers, fire fighters and emergency medical crews are out there continuing to protect and serve us – let's help them by following the rules of the road and driving with care.

Lastly, no "flushable" wipes are flushable

If you use wipes like Clorox wipes, etc please remember that no matter what the packaging says, these wipes cannot be flushed down the toilet.  They will wreak havoc on our sewer system and create problems that we all can do without at this time.  Throw all used wipes in the trash.
