Shootings

August 3, 2020 2:53 PM

The number of shots fired incidents we have endured is appalling.

Officers from the East District and the Violent Crimes Unit of the Madison Police Department are following every tip they receive to track down those responsible and make arrests.  I am confident that their work will result in arrests being made, but the lack of cooperation they encounter in the course of these investigations makes it more difficult get the perpetrators and guns off the streets quickly.

In the wake of the shootings that have occured, people want to know what the city is going to do prevent more of these type of shootings from happening in the future.  I know the MPD is doing everything that can be done under state law to investigate the shootings that have occured and will continue to use every resource available under current state law in an effort to prevent future shootings.  I support their efforts.

However, there are barriers that stand in the way of our doing more.

I hear people say we should simply add more officers to the department or that we need to get the guns off the streets.  However, Wisconsin law prohibits us from enacting and enforcing ordinances that would help prevent firearms from being obtained by criminals.  Incrediby, we cannot pass an ordinance making it illegal to leave a loaded, unsecured handgun in plain sight in an unlocked car.  It defies common sense.  Wisconsin law also impedes our ability to fund more community policing and the social service staff and services necessary for violence prevention efforts that are proven to be effective.

The MPD is working long and hard and using all their available resources on these shootings and following up on every tip and any camera footage they can access.  Social service agencies are also doing their part in effort to stop the violence and work with the families involved.  Anyone with information about who is committing the shootings needs to stand up and stop this violence in our community by giving the Madison Police information.   You can call Crimestoppers at 608-266-6014.
