District 17 Updates

Thank you

September 12, 2022 8:14 AM

Hello District 17

I want to say thank you for the overwhelming support I have received from so many of you over the last several days. This has been an incredibly difficult week for me and my family, but our faith has sustained us. I made a mistake when I joined a group that deceived me and other veterans. I quickly corrected it. I apologize for the embarrassment, distraction, and pain this has caused.

Statements and comments from other elected officials referring to me as a white supremacist or associating me with it are abhorrent, extremely offensive, and possibly defamatory. Let me say this very clearly.... white supremacy is a cancer in our society that must be eradicated wherever it is found.

The real threat is clearly from the far right - from those who instigated the assault on democracy on Jan 6 - but threats from democracy come in many forms. I can't equate those attacking me with the same poison or same threat level - but the seeds of toxicity come from similar desire shut down discourse and demonize opponents.

Since I entered office in April 2021, I have been a strong advocate for the BIPOC community, and my voting record fully demonstrates this.

I ensured that funding for the Imagination Center at Reindahl park stayed on track and was passed. This ensures that the most disadvantaged community in my district will have access to an excellent library.

I voted for and fully supported the language access line to ensure that disadvantaged members of our community who don't speak English have equal access to local government.

While serving on the Water Utility Board, Alder Wehelie and I pushed forward a resolution to ensure that low income and disadvantaged residents have subsidized assistance with their water utility bill.

I have consistently voted with care and compassion for our most marginalized communities and I have stood in solidarity with my BIPOC colleagues time and time again.
