Icy and Slippery Roads
Most Madison streets are ice-covered and very slippery. And the Streets Division is responding.
All 32 salt route crews have been looping through these main routes since the storm began and they will continue looping through these routes throughout the day.
Additional vehicles have been deployed to apply sand to residential areas to provide grit for traction.
Madison roads remain very slippery and all roadway users who choose to be on the roads must exercise great caution, especially on residential areas. Remember that while the storm is active any sand applied for traction can become covered with newly fallen ice or snow and limit the sand's effectiveness. If you must travel today, please make good choices. Be slow. Be patient. And be alert. Remember to allow for plenty of stopping distance and allow for ample travel time to arrive at your destinations safely.
Streets Division refuse, recycling, and large item collection for the west side of Madison have been affected by these icy conditions. For more information about the delays for the west side of Madison, please go to the Streets Division website, www.cityofmadison.com/streets.
Colder Temperatures will Render Salt Ineffective Use Sand not Salt
The recent winter storms have left many of the public sidewalks ice covered and slippery. City Ordinances requires property owners to treat sidewalks with sand and/or salt to provide traction when the ice cannot be removed. Sand provides better traction during colder temperatures. City Streets officials report that salt will be effective until about 6:00 p.m. this evening
Free sand can be found at the following locations- but only as long as the supply there lasts.
East Side:
- Sycamore Park (In the parking lot across from the Streets Division offices at 4602 Sycamore Ave.)
- Monona Golf Course (Front parking lot by the waste oil site at the corner of Monona Avenue and East Dean Road)
- Olbrich Park (Softball parking lot off of Walter Street)
- Reindahl Park (Portage Avenue parking lot)
- Warner Park (Softball parking lot near N. Sherman Avenue)
- School Road Waste Oil Site (At the intersection of School and Wheeler Roads)
- Demetral Park (Softball parking lot off of Sixth Street)
- Tenney Park (In the beach parking lot off of Sherman Avenue)
