Gun Violence

October 2, 2021 4:58 PM

The shooting in the 1400 block of Northport Drive on Thursday, September 30, is another example of the gun violence that we must do everything in our power to stop. I have gotten numerous calls and emails since that incident from residents who are scared and shaken. Everyone in Madison deserves to live in a neighborhood that is safe and free from the violence that takes lives, destabilizes neighborhoods, and undermines the future we want to build for our community.

What can we do? I reached out immediately to Chief Barnes and Captain Donahue after this latest shooting. The MPD's Violent Crimes Unit and other personnel is pursuing this crime. I believe the MPD will continue to work hard on this, and on all reports, of gun violence in order to hold shooters accountable. I will provide any updates on this investigation that MPD can share with me.

On a broader level, Chief Barnes is taking a data-driven approach to identifying patterns in shots fired incidents. That data, along with other crime data and assessments will help MPD better deploy and equip officers where they need to be when they need to be there.

In addition to the work of the MPD and our criminal justice system which must apprehend perpetrators and hold them accountable, we need to continue to treat gun violence as the public health crisis it is. We need stronger gun laws. We need to invest resources in services that can break the cycle of violence. We need youth programs and employment opportunities that show young people a path to a different life. We need to invest in our neighborhoods and in neighborhood leaders who can help strengthen communities.

In other words, the solution to gun violence needs to be inclusive and collaborative. As your alder, I will support our police and work to give both our officers and our communities the resources and attention necessary to meet this challenge on many levels.

Please know that I am working now to schedule a "Call to Action" meeting with the MPD, residents, other elected officials, school and community leaders. We need to come together to get the facts, share ideas, learn what we can do, and take steps forward to make District 18 safe for every resident. I'll share the date and time of that meeting as soon as I can.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have questions or to discuss public safety or any other issue that is on your mind.
