November 12 Neighborhood News & Updates

November 12, 2021 12:21 PM

Common Council Adopted City's 2022 Budget. On November 11, the Common Council adopted the City's 2022 Capital and Operating Budgets. Highlights include funding for a new ambulance at Fire Station 14 to serve the city's southeast side, construction of affordable housing, expansion of violence prevention services, and equitable service delivery for Town of Madison residents who will join the city in 2022. View detailed budget information at www.cityofmadison.com/finance/budget.

Zoning Changes Proposed to Support Accessory Dwelling Units. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), which are second dwelling units on properties with single-family homes, can be a great opportunity to provide additional housing options in neighborhoods across our growing city. ADUs have been allowable in Madison since 2013, and many growing cities across the U.S. are beginning to allow them or to relax zoning regulations to promote more of them. Based on recommendations in the Comprehensive Plan, recent housing reports, and the Mayor's 2021 Housing Forward Initiative, elected officials and staff have proposed changes to the City's Zoning code to help make the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units easier as another housing choice in Madison (please see Legislative Item 68079.)

To find out more about the scope of the proposed changes, please review one or both of these focused resources:
·         Brief memorandum from Planning & Zoning Staff, dated November 2, 2021
·         15-minute video of Staff Presentation to Plan Commission on November 8, 2021 (starts at Minute 9:30 in video)

Scheduled Public Hearings (Virtual Meetings)
·         Monday, November 22, 2021   Plan Commission (5:30 PM Start)
·         Tuesday, December 7, 2021    Common Council (6:30 PM Start

Questions & Comments
Please feel free to submit questions for staff or written comments for consideration by Plan Commissioners and members of the Common Council to: planning@cityofmadison.com, with "ADUs" in the subject line.

Alternative Site Parking. With snow forecast for this weekend, it's a good time to remember that next week – yes next week already – alternate side parking begins. Visit the city's webpage to learn more: https://www.cityofmadison.com/news/alternate-side-parking-begins-november-15-2021. As always, please help spread the word about this through your blogs, email lists, social media outlets, and networks.

2022 Neighborhood Grant Program. Its time to start thinking about neighborhood capacity building and physical enhancement projects for your neighborhood! The Neighborhood Grant Program materials will be released in a couple of weeks. In 2021, Junction Ridge used grant funds from this program, along with lots of volunteer efforts and other funding, to install a Neighborhood Oasis at Junction Ridge Park. View photos of the grant opening and learn more at https://www.jrna-madison.org/2021-oasis-grand-openingj. Some other projects underway now with 2021 funds include a gathering place in Mohican Triangle Park and Darbo Neighborhood Council leadership training.
