Snow Plowing Update: If you must be on the roads today be slow, be safe, and stay alert

Hello neighbors

All Madison streets will be snow-covered for the morning commute.  Use caution on your travels as the heaviest period of snow is still due to arrive later on Thursday with the dangerous cold and blizzard-like winds to follow. 

Streets Division trucks have been treating the main thoroughfares since the storm began, and crews will remain on these routes for the duration of the storm.

Due to the cold temperatures, the Streets Division shifted from applying salt to putting down sand on the hills, curves, and intersections to provide traction.  As a result, these main streets will be snow-covered.  They will remain snow-covered until after Christmas when temperatures are expected to rebound.

Make sure you are factoring in additional time as you are making your way through the City today because roads will be slick. If you must be on the roads today: be slow, be safe, and stay alert.  Above all, make good choices. 

Keep in mind, more snow is coming today and following that snowstorm will be exceptionally high winds that will lead to white out conditions as the fluffy dry snow is scattered causing significant blowing and drifting problems throughout our city.

As previously announced by the Mayor's office, City offices will be closing today (12/22) at 2:00pm, and city offices will not be open on Friday, December 23 as the high winds and cold will make travel hazardous.

Streets Division drop-off sites are closed both December 22 and December 23 as the personnel is needed to help with the snow response.  And trash and recycling collection has been suspended for Friday, December 23.  Additional details about these operational changes can be found on the Streets Division's website, www.cityofmadison.com/Streets.
