Monday Office Hours, Thanksgiving Trash Collection, Alternate Side Parking, Budget & New Midtown Police Blog

I wanted to send out a few updates as we head into the Thanksgiving Holiday week. This update includes information about my open office hours this week, refuse and recycling collection schedule for the Thanksgiving Holiday, alternate side parking reminder, the budget and the launch of a new Midtown Police District blog.

Open Office Hours

On Monday evening (11/19/2018), I will have open office hours from 4:30-7pm at Alicia Ashman Library - Study Room - 733 N High Point Rd, Madison, WI 53717. Feel free to come by, say hi and pick up a good book to read! 

Collection Schedule for the Thanksgiving Holiday

There will be no refuse and recycling collection on Thursday, November 22 or Friday, November 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.  The drop-off sites will also be closed on these two days.

Directions for Residents with a Wednesday and Thursday Refuse/Recycling Collection Day

On Wednesday, November 21, the Streets Division will collect refuse and recycling from those who have a regularly scheduled Wednesday and Thursday collection.

Madison residents who normally have a Wednesday and Thursday refuse and recycling collection should place their collection carts at the curb for pickup by 7am on Wednesday, November 21. Residents should consult their collection schedule calendars to determine if their recyclables are scheduled for collection.

Residents within these collection districts are reminded to be sure that their carts are curbside prior to 7am.  Carts set out late may not be collected until their next scheduled pickup day.

Directions for Residents with a Friday and Monday Refuse/Recycling Collection Day

On Monday, November 26, the Streets Division will collect refuse and recycling from those who have a regularly scheduled Friday and Monday collection.

Madison residents who normally have a Friday and Monday refuse and recycling collection should place their collection carts at the curb for pickup by 7am on Monday, November 26. Residents should consult their collection schedule calendars to determine if their recyclables are scheduled for collection.

Residents within these collection districts are reminded to be sure that their carts are curbside prior to 7am.  Carts set out late may not be collected until their next scheduled pickup day.

Drop-off Site Information

The Streets Division drop-off sites will also be closed on Thursday, November 22, and Friday, November 23.  The sites will re-open on Saturday, November 24 at 8:30am.  See below for the hours for all three drop-off sites:

The sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd. on the southwest side and 4602 Sycamore Ave. on the east side.  There is a yard waste only drop-off site located on the far west side at 402 South Point Rd.

All three drop-off sites regular hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm seven days a week and until 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Those hours will remain in effect at all three locations until 4:30pm on Sunday, December 2.

On Monday, December 3, the drop-off sites will transition to winter availability.  Starting on December 3, the yard waste only location at 402 South Point Rd. will close for the season and the remaining sites at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave. will be open from 7:30am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday only.

Additional Information Regarding Holiday Collections

In order to collect refuse and recycling from two collection districts in a single shift, the Streets Division diverts crews from other services such as leaf collection and large item collection to refuse and recycling operations.  Therefore, residents requiring large item collection or leaf collection should anticipate delays, or consider bringing the material to a drop-off site.

Alternate Side Parking Rules BegAn on November 15 at 1am

Alternate side parking is in effect from November 15 to March 15 for the entire City of Madison, except for those in the Snow Emergency Zone.

Alternate side parking rules are enforced from 1am to 7am seven days a week regardless of weather conditions.

Alternate Side Parking Rules

Vehicles parked on the street should be parked on the odd house numbered side of the street between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on odd numbered dates.

Vehicles should be parked on the even house numbered side of the street between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on even numbered dates.

Violations of the alternate side parking ordinance are punishable by fines of $20.  The fine increases to $60 during a declared Snow Emergency.

Be sure to continue following all other parking restrictions while also following alternate side parking rules.

Snow Emergency Zone Information

At present, the Snow Emergency Zone extends from S. Park Street to Thornton Avenue and the Yahara River, and between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. 

In this area of Madison, alternate side parking is only enforced during declared snow emergencies.

Residents who park their vehicles on the street within the Snow Emergency Zone are strongly encouraged to sign up to receive email and text message alerts regarding snow emergency declarations at the City of Madison Winter website, www.cityofmadison.com/winter.

Additional Information

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead when parking their vehicle on the street for the evening to be sure they are in compliance with the alternate side rules. The Streets Division also recommends that residents remove seldom used vehicles, boats, and other trailers from the streets to avoid fines and help with plowing operations.

On the city's winter website, besides signing up to receive text and/or email alerts regarding declared snow emergencies, residents can also sign up to receive Snow Plow Update e-mails that will detail the Streets Division's operations in response to snow events.

Other useful winter information, such as information about salt use, locations for free sand to use on sidewalks, or tips on how to bicycle in the winter, and more are all available at www.cityofmadison.com/winter.

2019 Budget

On Tuesday, November 13th, the Common Council passed the 2019 Capital ($347,657,845) and Operating Budget ($332,066,443). You can learn more about the budget and the budget process here.
