Watershed focus group dates for on-site meetings, July 21 through August 13

Here's information from Engineering about upcoming watershed focus groups for Dunn's Marsh, Greentree/McKenna, and East Badger Mill Creek Watershed. Most of these studies are outside of District 19, but I've bolded meetings that are in District 19. I plan to be at those meetings.

Map of Watersheds from 07212020

The City of Madison Engineering Division is conducting organized focus group meetings for the next phase of its Watershed Studies beginning the week of July 20th running through August 13th. The meetings were requested by community members, and are open to the public, but the conversation will be tailored to gathering more information on flooding issues in the meeting area.

During this round of focus group meetings, Engineers will meet with groups of residents on site, in specific areas hit the hardest by flooding in the past few years, including the August 2018 flood event. The purpose of the first round of focus group meetings will be to gather flooding information based on residents' experiences.

The meetings are expected to take one hour, and meetings will be held outside, rain or shine, in a walk-and-talk format. If rain is predicted, please dress and accessorize appropriately with umbrellas, jackets and proper footwear. Social distancing will be practiced and masks are encouraged.

City Engineers, or the consultants building the drainage models, will facilitate the group. If anyone needs accessible accommodations, or a translator present, please connect with the respective project manager for the watershed, which can be found on the City's flooding website.

The public was encouraged to sign up for these groups as part of the Watershed Public Information Series that happened last fall. However, anyone should feel free to attend any of the scheduled meetings in their neighborhood at their designated date and time. The Engineering Division worked with alders, and residents to find a date, location and time that worked for the specific areas.

The Engineering Division is leading a total of ten watershed studies this year, which are mostly located on the west and near west side. A watershed is an area of land where precipitation that falls on it, drains to a common waterway, such as a stream or lake. The watershed acts like a funnel by collecting all the water within the area and channeling it to a single point. These focus group meetings are one step in the watershed studies process.

Voter Registration "Closes" Wednesday

Wednesday, July 22, is the final day to register to vote online or by mail prior to the August 11 Partisan Primary.

The City of Madison Clerk's Office encourages voters to check their registration at https://MyVote.wi.gov. Anyone who has moved – even to a new apartment in the same building – will need to update their voter registration.

Voter registration will be available at all absentee voting sites beginning next Monday, July 27, through the Friday before Election Day.  Voters also have the option to register at the polls on Election Day.

Proof of address is needed when registering to vote, and may be electronic.  Any of the following documents can be used as proof of address as long the name and address on the document correspond to the name and address on the voter registration form:

  • Utility bill issued in the last 90 days (water, gas, electric, phone, cable, or internet)
  • Bank statement (bank, credit union, credit card, mortgage)
  • Current and valid Wisconsin driver license/ID
  • Government document (federal, state, county, municipal, tribal, UW, Madison College, or public school)
  • Paycheck
  • Residential lease effective on day of registration (cannot be used if registering to vote by mail)
  • Certified housing list from UW-Madison or Edgewood College (available at absentee voting sites and at the polls)
  • Affidavit from a social service agency providing services to the homeless
  • Contract or intake document from a nursing home or residential care facility

As always, if there is anything I can do to help, feel free to reach out: district19@cityofmadison.com
