Spring 2023 Election: Run for Council!

November 2, 2022 6:57 PM

In in the interest of encouraging District 19 residents to consider running for Alder, I'm formally sharing that I will not be running for re-election in the Spring. Many of you know that when I decided to run for a second term, I also decided it would be my last. The last few years have been incredibly challenging but serving the residents of District 19 and the City of Madison has been an amazing experience. I'm grateful for the privilege to serve.

If you are interested in running, please reach out! I'm happy to share information about the job, the City's budget, how the City works, as well as information on how to run.  You can also read more here: Run for Council.

There are still a few more months left in my term and items on my to-do list, including work on the 2023 Budget. There will be plenty to reflect on from my time as Alder, but I do want to briefly mention some of the major policy accomplishments I'm proud to have been part of:

  • Transportation
    • Policy: Bus Rapid Transit, Transit Network Redesign, Vision Zero, Transportation Demand Management Program, Transit Oriented Development, Upgraded Fare Collection Technology, Safe Streets Madison, and Complete Green Streets.
    • Projects: Reconstruction of Old Middleton, Craig Avenue, University Ave, and Lake Mendota Drive
  • Government Structure
    • Task Force for Government Structure Report and Implementation
    • Helped with implementation of virtual meetings, hybrid meetings, and improving council meeting structure (i.e. moving all public comment to the beginning).
    • Continuing work to improve communications, including creation of Community Engagement Strategist
    • Helped make the job of Alder more accessible and equitable for current and future Alders
  • Digital Equity
    • Task Force on Digital Inclusion Strategic Priorities
    • Secured funding for a Digital Inclusion Coordinator
  • Public Safety
    • Supported creation of and championed additional investments in Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES)
  • Planning
    • Odana Area Plan
    • Multiple developments that will help with Madison's strong need for additional housing
    • Updating of the City's Landmark Ordinances
  • Stormwater
    • Watershed studies
    • Updated stormwater development ordinance
    • Projects related to flood mitigation

That's a sampling of some of the work I'm proud of and I'm looking forward to continuing to help move the City forward over the next few months. I want to thank the residents and colleagues that made productive contributions to these efforts and the many dedicated, knowledgeable City staff members with whom we collaborated to improve the lives of our residents.
