Leaf Collection and Street Sweeper Update & Collection Calendars 2020-2021

November 8, 2019 9:26 AM

Some important updates about collection and sweeping this weekend. I'm also sharing information on how to get the 2020-2021 collection calendar.

Yard Waste Collection Happening This Weekend

Check the Pickup Schedule Map to Learn if Your Neighborhood Will be Collected

Leaf collection machines

The Streets Division will be collecting leaves and yard waste on Saturday, November 9, 2019 and again on Sunday, November 10.

Yard waste collection crews will be working from 6:00am to 5:00pm both days.

While the Streets Division anticipates continuing leaf and yard waste collection beyond this weekend, the approaching winter season means collection may not last for much longer as crews will be needed for snow and ice duties.

Who Will Get Their Leaves Collected This Weekend

Residents should go to www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste and click on the Pickup Schedule map.

If your neighborhood is shaded green for "Pickup Pending," these residents should place leaves and yard waste to the curb before 6:00am on Saturday to ensure collection for this round.

The areas marked "Pickup Pending" on the map today (Friday, Nov. 8, 2019) are likely to have their leaves collected on Saturday, November 9 or Sunday, November 10.

Weather conditions and equipment availability will affect how many neighborhoods are actually collected this weekend.

What Happens if Your Yard Waste Is Not Collected This Weekend

The Streets Division intends to continue yard waste collection beyond this weekend.

However, residents who are not likely to have their leaves and yard waste collected this weekend are encouraged to use the drop-off sites rather than placing the material to the curb.

As winter approaches, collection crews may be suddenly reassigned to snow and ice duties in order to respond to the weather, and be unable to return to yard waste collection until the spring of 2020.

The Streets Division drop-off sites are open seven days week 8:30am until 4:30pm and until 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  These hours will remain in effect until Sunday, December 8.

Additional Information

For additional information about yard waste and the drop-off sites, go to www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste.

Street Sweepers to Operate Around the Clock this Weekend

Streets Division street sweepers will be working continuously from 7:00am on Saturday, November 9, 2019 until approximately 5pm on Sunday, November 10, or until temperatures become too cold to for sweepers to operate.

This street sweeping blitz will collect as much material from the road as we can during what is likely to be the final opportunity for street sweeping this year.

This is around-the-clock effort to collect as much debris and leaves from the roads as possible, and thereby preventing leaf tea and other runoff from entering our waterways.

Street sweepers require water to operate. This means they need warm enough temperatures so they do not freeze.

The hours from 7am on Saturday and continuing until approximately 5pm Sunday will likely be the final window of time for this calendar year where temperatures will allow sweeping to occur this calendar year.

Since sweepers will be working around the clock this weekend, all roadway users should be on the lookout for these slow-moving vehicles. They will be on the roads at times and places not typical for this time of year. If you encounter a sweeper, please remember to give them the space they need to perform their work safely and do not cut them off.

For more information about street sweeping operations, contact the Streets Division office that services your home. Residents east of South Park Street should call 608-246-4532 and residents west of South Park Street should call 608-266-4681. Questions can be emailed at streets@cityofmadison.com.

2020-2021 Refuse, Recycling, and Large Item Schedule Calendars Now Available

The 2020-2021 collection schedule calendars are now available.

The collection schedule calendar shows what day refuse, recycling, and large items will be collected by Streets Division crews.

When placing carts and large items out for collection, be sure to have them out to the curb by 7:00am on the pickup day shown on your collection schedule calendar.

To get the calendar, go to www.cityofmadison.com/collectionschedule and enter your address as directed. This will open a new tab in your web browser.  In the new tab, you will first see the 2019 collection calendar. When you scroll down, you will find the 2020 and 2021 calendars.

Residents who prefer paper copies of the calendar mailed to them can contact the Streets Division office that services their home to receive their collection schedule calendar.

If you live west of S. Park Street, you should call 608-266-4681.  If you live east of S. Park Street, you should call 608-246-4532.

Additional information about refuse, recycling, and large item collection can be found on the Streets Division's website, www.cityofmadison.com/streets.
