12 N Few Street Proposal

12 N. Few Proposal's Demolition Request at Plan Commission on Monday

The developer of the Scooter Therapy site at 12 N. Few St. has applied for a demolition permit that will be considered at Monday's Plan Commission meeting. The demolition permit is required because the developer proposes removing and replacing the Scooter Therapy addition along N. Few St. and the back wall of the main building. The proposed redevelopment consists of 8 ground floor commercial spaces with 8 one-bedroom apartments above. The application, staff reports, and public comments are posted here.

Note that in response to Urban Design Commission's input, the developer has altered to the proposal to remove the 4 residential parking spaces and is now proposing no parking stalls for the residential or commercial spaces. The site is zoned Commercial Corridor-Transitional which requires no onsite parking, but some neighbors have expressed concerns about added pressure on street parking.

TLNA Council earlier voted to support the redevelopment and UDC gave initial approval to the proposed redevelopment, but Commissioners had some concerns, particularly with regard to access and circulation for both commercial and residential units, so they did not grant final approval in judging the proposal's conformity with Urban Design District #8 standards and guidelines. At a future Common Council meeting, a proposed amendment to UDD #8 that would allow a portion of the proposed building to be closer to Curtis Court than currently allowed will be considered. UDC already approved that change to UDD #8.

New Tenney Beach Shelter at Plan Commission on Monday

On Monday, May 24, the Plan Commission will consider approval of a Conditional Use for lakefront development to allow reconstruction of the shelter building at Tenney Beach, 1330 Sherman Avenue. If approved, the demolition of the current shelter and construction of the new structure are expected to start after this summer's beach season. See "City Meetings of Interest" below for participation options and the meeting agenda.

The proposed replacement shelter will include a pump room as part of the Clean Beach system, a joint project between the City of Madison and Dane County. Several options for the shelter were discussed at an earlier Public Information Meeting - the slide presentation for that meeting, including info on the proposed beach exclosure system, can be found the Parks Division's website for the project.

TLNA Party in the Park Returns On June 6

From Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association: Party in the Park will take place on Sunday, June 6, from 4-7pm in Reynolds Park. Annually, this marks the start of summer, and creates a moment and space for gathering with friends and neighbors in a park in the heart of your neighborhood. Originally hosted by Cork 'n Bottle many years ago as a fundraiser for the local public elementary schools, we have carried that tradition forward and with gratitude for the big-hearted souls at CNB then and now.

When you come to Reynolds Park on Sunday June 6, you can expect a low key gathering with fence decorating, participatory mural happenings, a place to name your wishes and dreams, and plenty of space to stretch out and play. While the county shifts their recommendations for our safety in the time of COVID, we will follow their guidance but will continue to NOT offer shared food and drink. Sadly, that means no beer on tap, no ice cream on scoop. Please bring your own. Our party permit allows for alcohol to be consumed in the park on the day of the Party, so stop by CNB on your way to the park.

NEW THIS YEAR: Beautiful yard signs designed by the legendary Kelly Maxwell are also available. The signs say "Slow Down", and are ostensibly for yard use to slow traffic as the city rolls out their new "Twenty is Plenty" on some streets in the Tenney Lapham neighborhood. These beautiful signs share a deeper message across the neighborhood, reminding us to take the time to slow down just as the world around us wants to speed back up. Historic Preservation Month Continues With Focus on: Gates of Heaven

During the month of May, the City Engineering Division has been focusing on one of the oldest surviving synagogues buildings in the nation, located in District 2! Engineering would like the community to join in celebrating Historic Preservation Month as we focus on the recent restoration work at Gates of Heaven.

Gates of Heaven was built in 1863 and is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in the nation and is located in James Madison Park. Gates of Heaven is a locally designated landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Throughout May, City Engineering has focused on different parts of the Gates of Heaven restoration work with social media posts and a video highlight. The community can expect unique information they've never seen before about the following topics on the City Engineering Facebook and Twitter pages:

Gates of Heaven is currently undergoing restoration work which includes restoring the masonry, windows and doors. The work also includes cleaning and consolidation of the Madison sandstone, limited repairs to stone, cleaning of brick, repointing of stone and brick, rehabilitation of the wood sash, doors, and related trim, and installation of exterior storms on all windows.
