1. City Budget

Last week, the $40 Vehicle Registration Fee was approved. I voted in favor after supporting Alder Foster's reduction to $35, which failed 7-11 (with one abstention). This means the $40 fee will be added to your next vehicle registration. Budget amendments are due this Wednesday with final deliberations happening November 12 through November 14.

2. Water main flushing happening between Stoughton Road and I-39/90

Water Main Flushing will be happening throughout the Rolling Meadows, Heritage Heights and Heistand neighborhoods beginning this week.

To improve water quality and minimize discoloration, City of Madison water mains are comprehensively flushed by a technique known as unidirectional flushing. The procedure is performed in warm-weather months and involves the systematic opening and closing of hydrants, one section of main at a time, to force the water through the pipes at high velocity, removing accumulated mineral sediment until the water is clear. The operation can take from a few minutes to over an hour, although most last about 30 minutes.

If your water pressure drops, or water is discolored

When flushing crews are working close to your residence or business, you may experience periods of very low pressure or discolored water, which can be drawn into homes and businesses if the water is being used during or immediately following the flushing. Such events should affect customers for a few hours at most. The discoloration is caused by iron (red color) or manganese (black color) particles being dislodged from the water main which can stain porcelain and laundry. If discoloration occurs, open the cold tap nearest the water meter--usually a basement sink--to full flow until the water runs clear. In some situations this may take 5 to 10 minutes. It is also advised that you make sure your water is clear before doing laundry or other projects for which discolored water could cause problems.

When

During the flushing season, most crews work between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one crew (and sometimes more) working at night from 10 p.m. to 6  a.m., primarily in the central isthmus and university areas.


3. This Thursday: Help build the Galaxy Park playground (Jackson Quarry Lane and Milky Way)

The City of Madison Parks Division is installing a playground at Galaxy Park and want your input.

This process includes a regional playground workshop specific to playground replacements anticipated for 2020 on the east side including Galaxy Park, Morrison Park, and Orlando Bell Park.

The workshop will include a larger group discussion, providing opportunity for neighborhoods to learn and share ideas, then will break out into smaller individually staffed sessions to address design considerations specific to each park. Following the workshop, staff will use input gathered at this meeting to develop two playground concepts, which will be presented at a second playground meeting held this winter. The new playground equipment will be installed in 2020.

Please feel free to bring children to help provide input on the playground!

4. This Thursday: A safer way to cross Highway 30 

autumn ridge path

City Engineering has scheduled the first Public Information Meeting for a project involving the installation of a multi-use path that will connect users between Milwaukee Street and Commercial Avenue north of Highway 30. Called the Autumn Ridge Path, the proposed route will include a bridge overpass of Highway 30 and will use a combination of off-street and on-street facilities south of Highway 30 to make the connection:

This first public meeting will provide a broad overview of the project and feedback from the meeting will be used to narrow the focus of the design.

5. This Thursday: Active Shooter Training

You are invited to a free training event provided by the City of Madison Police Department. This training is open to all members of the greater Madison community, although this is a mature topic and the presentation provides candid information that may not be suitable for children under the age of 10, depending on the maturity of the child.

Class Description:

While the likelihood of finding yourself under fire by an active shooter is less than that of being struck by lightning, there are simple things you can do to respond effectively if you ever find yourself in this unthinkable situation. 

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) class is a statistically based training program for all members of the greater Madison community interested in demystifying these frightening events. The training includes: A statistical breakdown of active shooter events, historical case studies, behavioral tools to maximize your chances of survival, table-top scenario discussions & a Q&A session w/MPD active shooter event experts.

6. Place pumpkins in yard waste piles

Put your pumpkins on your leaves and yard waste pile for Streets Division crews to collect. Pumpkins contain valuable nutrients and they're better composted along with other yard waste rather than sent to the landfill with your trash.

When placing your pumpkins, decorative gourds, corn stalks, or other natural decorations out for yard waste collection, please set them on top of your leaf pile or leaf bags. Be sure to remove any non-compostable items like wire, tea candles, or electric lights.

When placing leaves and other yard waste to the curb for collection, pile that material on the terrace or at the street edge. If you choose to bag your yard waste in compostable paper bags or plastic bags, be sure to leave them open at the top so crews can identify what is inside. 

Never put your leaves and yard waste piles directly in the street. 

You may also bring your pumpkins and other yard waste material to one of the Streets Division's drop-off sites. The sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd., 4602 Sycamore Ave, and 402 South Point Rd. The sites are open from 8:30am to 4:30pm seven days a week and until 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  These hours will remain in effect until 4:30pm on Sunday, December 2.

If you are a home composter, you can spice up your backyard compost bin with pumpkins, too.  Pumpkins are a great source of nitrogen, and a good way to offset carbon from fallen leaves.

While visiting the site, you can use the Pickup Schedule map to learn when to place your material out for pickup. Collection time estimates are available by calling 608-267-2088. You can get additional information about yard waste by contacting the Streets Division offices, too.
