Information from Madison Police Department on Cottage Grove Road Shooting

Hi everyone,

Last night, there was a shooting near the 4500 block of Cottage Grove Road. No injuries were reported, but there was damage to multiple residences and vehicles. The Madison Police Department has provided the below update:

Multiple callers reported shots fired in the 4500 block of Cottage Grove Rd. Officers responded and found approximately 36 shell casings, two damaged vehicles, and damage to buildings. From the evidence collected it is believed that there were two sides shooting at one another. Several rounds entered into neighboring residences, missing one occupant by approximately 5'. Other occupants seeked shelter upon hearing the rounds strike their residences. Several people were contacted by police and several apartments searched. Officers are collecting video evidence. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The Madison Police Department has also shared with me that this incident is being investigated by their Violent Crimes Unit (VCU). This group of detectives specializes in the investigation of weapons offenses, particularly shootings. Each investigation is unique. Last night, their forensic specialists spent a considerable amount of time at the scene gathering evidence. Additionally, many officers canvassed the area for witnesses and involved parties. Detectives are expected to be returning to the scene today in order to view things during daylight hours. They will also likely be talking with area residents again in an effort to better understand events and why they happened. It is difficult to predict if additional information will be available for public release. Please know that the Madison Police Department takes this case very seriously and will devote all available resources to holding involved parties to account.
