City meetings schedule
The new yard waste schedule begins October 11, 2020
The Streets Division will be using a brand new leaf collection schedule. Madison residents will have assigned days when you should set leaves to the curb for collection.
The new system will begin the week of October 11, 2020.
The yard waste collection schedule will be available by October 1, 2020 on the Streets Division's website.
Drop-off sites hours remain limited – expect lines for entry
The drop-off sites at 4602 Sycamore Ave, 1501 W. Badger Rd, and 402 South Point Rd are open to accept yard waste. The sites are open 7:30 am to 2:50 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays.
The number of vehicles allowed into the unloading area at the sites is limited to help social distancing and the overall safety of the facilities.
Due to the limited hours and restrictions on the number of people unloading at a single time, you are likely to encounter a long line when trying to unload material at the drop-off sites.
Visit the Streets Division's website for more information about the drop-off sites.
Why has the leaf collection system changed?
Due to the budget hole caused by the pandemic, the Streets Division was unable to hire the usual number of seasonal employees. This is also why the drop-off site hours have been reduced this year.
The new schedule is an effort to deploy personnel strategically and provide residents with the exact date when to set their leaves out for pickup so no one misses their curbside collection opportunities.
Additional information
For additional information regarding yard waste collection or other Streets Division services, visit cityofmadison.com/streets.
North Star Dog Park open
The North Star Dog Park, located at 439 Milky Way, is now open. Due to the dry summer, the grass has not established within the dog park as well as hoped. However, Madison Parks staff will continue to monitor and improve the turf within the dog park and will likely reseed this fall and/or next spring.
Kwik Trip on schedule
The construction of the Kwik Trip at Sprecher and Cottage Grove Roads is on-schedule, and they plan to open their doors on December 31.

Madison Metropolitan School District: Community information sessions on the 2020 referenda
The Madison Metropolitan School District is holding several community information sessions during September and October to discuss the upcoming referenda that will appear on your ballot in November. The sessions are being streamed live on their Facebook page.
City budget season
The mayor introduced her 2021 Capital Budget on Sept. 1. The Finance Committee will vote on amendments on Sept. 21. The Mayor will submit her Executive Operating Budget on Oct. 6. Both the Capital Budget and the Operating Budget will be discussed and voted on by the full Common Council on Nov. 10 and 11.
The below graphic explains the key differences between the Capital and Operating Budgets.
Annual Madison compost bin and rain barrel sale returns on Saturday, October 10
After a one-year hiatus, the annual Madison compost and rain barrel sale is back at a new location. This year's sale will be held at the Garver Feed Mill on Saturday, October 10. The new location provides contactless pick-up and experts will be on hand to answer questions.
Harvesting rainwater for your plants saves money and reduces stormwater runoff into local waterways.
Compost bins and 50 and 100 gallon rain barrels with diverters are available at discounted prices. Pre-orders before Oct 2 receive an additional $10 off. Supplies are limited and due to COVID restrictions, pre-ordering is strongly recommended.
