Tomorrow: Democracy in the Park

Many voters have been contacting the City Clerk's Office to ask about options for returning their absentee ballots in person. In response to these questions, the Clerk's Office is partnering with the City of Madison Parks Division to allow City of Madison voters to return their absentee ballots to poll workers stationed in more than 200 City of Madison parks.

The Democracy in the Park event will be held 9 AM – 3 PM, Saturday, September 26 and Saturday, October 3. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held Sunday, September 27 and Sunday, October 4 instead.

In our district, this includes: Dominion Park, Door Creek Park, Galaxy Park (even though it's not quite a park yet), Heritage Heights Park, Hiestand Park, Kennedy Park, Kingston-Onyx Park, McClellan Park, McGinnis Park, North Star Park, Portland Park and Reston Heights Park.

Felland Road Development Re-Approval at October 5 Plan Commission

Simply Homes will be seeking a re-approval for their Jannah Village subdivison at the October 5 Plan Commission meeting. They had previously received approval but due to complications in their stormwater management plans they have updated and resubmitted their plans with additional lots dedicated to stormwater. This proposal is at 754, 804, and 904 Felland Road which is just north of Commercial Avenue and on the west side of Felland Road. This subdivision would include 48 single-family lots, 4 lots for two-family twin homes (8 total units), 4 lots to be developed with up to 306 multi-family units, 2 outlots for public stormwater management, and 1 outlot for public parkland.

New yard waste schedule begins October 11, 2020

The Streets Division will be using a brand new leaf collection schedule. Madison residents will have assigned days when you should set leaves to the curb for collection.

The new system will begin the week of October 11, 2020.

The yard waste collection schedule will be available by October 1, 2020 on the Streets Division's website.

Drop-off sites hours remain limited – expect lines for entry

The drop-off sites at 4602 Sycamore Ave, 1501 W. Badger Rd, and 402 South Point Rd are open to accept yard waste. The sites are open 7:30 am to 2:50 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays.

The number of vehicles allowed into the unloading area at the sites is limited to help social distancing and the overall safety of the facilities.

Due to the limited hours and restrictions on the number of people unloading at a single time, you are likely to encounter a long line when trying to unload material at the drop-off sites.

Visit the Streets Division's website for more information about the drop-off sites.

Why was the leaf collection system changed?

Due to the budget hole caused by the pandemic, the Streets Division was unable to hire the usual number of seasonal employees. This is also why the drop-off site hours have been reduced this year.

The new schedule is an effort to deploy personnel strategically and provide residents with the exact date when to set their leaves out for pickup so no one misses their curbside collection opportunities.

North Star Dog Park open

The North Star Dog Park, located at 439 Milky Way, is now open. Due to the dry summer, the grass has not established within the dog park as well as hoped. However, Madison Parks staff will continue to monitor and improve the turf within the dog park and will likely reseed this fall and/or next spring.

Madison Metropolitan School District: Community information sessions on the 2020 referenda

The Madison Metropolitan School District is holding several community information sessions during September and October to discuss the upcoming referenda that will appear on your ballot in November. The sessions will be streamed live on their Facebook page

Upcoming sessions:

September 29: La Follette HS, 5:00-6:30pm

October 1: West HS, 5:00-6:30pm

October 6: Spanish session, 6:30-8pm

October 7: Teletown hall meeting, 6-7pm

Other updates

On September 22, Gov. Tony Evers issued a new statewide mask mandate, replacing the previous order that was set to expire on Sept. 28. The new order is set to expire on Saturday, November 21, unless another order takes its place. Dane County also has a face covering requirement that took effect on July 13. The Governor's order sets a minimum bar of what must be followed, but it also allows local communities to be more strict. Because the order from Public Health Madison & Dane County has some stricter requirements, those requirements must also be followed. See Dane County face covering requirements to learn more. And remember to #MaskUpMadison!

Annual Madison compost bin and rain barrel sale returns on Saturday, October 10

After a one-year hiatus, the annual Madison compost and rain barrel sale is back at a new location. This year's sale will be held at the Garver Feed Mill on Saturday, October 10.  The new location provides contactless pick-up and experts will be on hand to answer questions.

Harvesting rainwater for your plants saves money and reduces stormwater runoff into local waterways.

Compost bins and 50 and 100 gallon rain barrels with diverters are available at discounted prices. Pre-orders before Oct 2 receive an additional $10 off. Supplies are limited and due to COVID restrictions, pre-ordering is strongly recommended.
