Hello neighbors,

Here are meetings of potential interest this week:

Monday: Landmarks, 5pm – presentation of drafted updates to Landmarks Ordinances, which will impact the University Heights area.

Tuesday: Common Council, 6:30pm

• Appeal of Plan Commission's Conditional Use Approval for redevelopment at 3734 Speedway (old Stop-n-Go/Kwik Trip)
• Low Mow May resolution
  • See this presentation for why turf specialists recommend Low Mow rather than No Mow May
• Approval of contracts for engineering services for Wingra watershed, and Near West watershed.
• Conversion of certain roadway medians to turf or concrete
• Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) loan program
• 2022 Update to the Comprehensive Plan
• Acceptance of donation and construction of the Glenway Golf Park Clubhouse

Wednesday:

• Transit Oriented Development Zoning Overlay, 12pm, and 6pm (Also May 16 at 12pm, and 6pm)
• Board of Public Works, 4:30pm (public comment at 5:30pm) - the 2022 Resource Recovery Special Charge will be discussed

Reminders:

• I have been seeing a lot of items on curbs in the neighborhood left out with the hopes that someone will take them. If you have large items that aren't getting taken within a few days, please make sure to use the City's website to order large item collection.
• Street closures will begin May 18 for the University Avenue reconstruction project.

Events:

• Madison Night Market, 4-8pm May 12, June 9, August 11, and September 8.
• Dine in purchases at Mickie's Dairy Bar from 6-7am on Fridays this month benefit Porchlight.

• Madison Public Library's Library Takeover Saturday, May 14, Lisa Link Peace Park (425 State Street) from 4pm-6pm. (Rain location is Central Library, third floor - 201 W. Mifflin Street). The event, Essential: True Stories of Unseen Work, is an opportunity for people to share their stories from the pandemic and beyond. People from all walks of life are invited to attend and share a 5-minute story open-mic style.
• Lake Wingra Watershed Gathering, May 21, 1-4pm. Interact with people from 30 organizations committed to clean water needed by all life forms. Learn more about water stewardship and practices. Leave with new ideas to collectively ensure healthy lakes, streams, and the lands in-between.
• Annual Chinese Orphans Benefit flute concert, Sunday May 22, 2pm, First Baptist Church, 518 N Franklin Ave.
• Madison Bike Week, June 5-11

Announcements:

• For more than 20 years, United Way of Dane County has recognized outstanding volunteers in our community through the Community Volunteer Awards. In 2022, they will be accepting nominations through May 13. Nominate a volunteer today!
• Madison Parks is aware of the boat launch navigation issues at Olbrich Park. As in previous years, they are advising boaters to use caution navigating the narrowed channel where the Starkweather Creek meets Lake Monona due to low lake levels and creek sediment.
• The City of Madison is now accepting applicants for the first Youth Poet Laureate. With this initiative, Madison will become a member of the National Youth Poet Laureate program, which honors talented poets from ages of thirteen (13) through nineteen (19) and provides for competitive opportunities for young people to showcase their literary art on the regional and national stage.

Save the Date:

• Fresh water is Earth's most precious resource. We all use it every day and can all have an impact on the ability to provide reliable supplies of clean water now and for future generations. On June 14 and June 21, participate in a two-session course to become a steward of our local waters.
