Alder Rummel’s Updates
D6 Items of Interest Week of November 12, 2018
Highlights: The election last week was a roller coaster of emotions, a nail biter that brought disappointment and joy. There were some amazing firsts: the most women elected to Congress at 123, two Native American women (Kansas and New Mexico) and two Muslim women (one Palestinian-American, one Somali-American) elected to Congress. The first ever African-Americans were elected to Congress from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Two Latinx women elected to Congress from Texas for the first time. The youngest person ever elected to Congress (28). The first openly gay Governor elected in Colorado. A big jump in turnout of 18-29 year old voters across the country. On the local level, Tenney-Lapham's Ward 45 had more than 100% turnout due to all the new voters! While the legislative balance of power did not change in our state, the election of Tony Evers to Governor will create opportunities to change the leadership and direction of state agencies and revamp budget priorities. Many of you worked hard to make sure every voter voted! As a result, we have a new governor, the first African American Lt Governor Mandela Barnes, Josh Kaul is the new attorney general and Tammy Baldwin was re-elected to the US Senate. We have a ways to go before our elected officials represent the diversity of our country but last Tuesday was the first sign of the demographic changes coming to the US. I welcome it.
On Monday, meet Vata Edari, to learn about her application for a liquor license for CocoVaa Chocolatier. The Council will spend Tuesday night and maybe Wednesday discussing the 2019 Capital and Operating budget.
I hope to see you Saturday at the Mayor's Neighborhood Conference, details below.
