Highlights:  At press time, the city's website is undergoing scheduled maintenance and the weekly calendar is not accessible for me to do my usual copy and paste routine.... I am reporting on Tuesday meetings only.  I decided it was a birthday gift from city IT.  Alder Zellers has a more complete list of upcoming weekly meetings on her blog if you are interested. 


On Thursday February 21, I held a neighborhood meeting on Nexus, phase 3 of the redevelopment of Union Corners, and invited D6 and D12 residents. The Gorman team presented information about the overall site and a general concept for the final phase. There was a consensus among neighbors that the proposed bulk and massing – L shaped building, 4 stories on E Wash and 3 stories on Milwaukee St with underground parking for residential and surface parking for retail was underwhelming compared to the adopted general development plan  (no renderings of the buildings were shown just the site plan with parking lot configuration). The majority of people at the meeting asked for more density: ie more height on E Wash to make it a signature corner and structured parking to serve residents and commercial tenants for the parcel and to provide extra parking for Carbon tenants. With structured parking, it was felt there could be better land use and more green space. The Gorman team promised to work on revisions. I am working with the Gorman team on scheduling a second meeting in April.

DRAFTER'S ANALYSIS: The City has a procedure for filling aldermanic vacancies, set out in Sec. 2.03, MGO. An unusual event occurred this year, when an alder resigned after the time for filing of nomination papers had closed, but before the election. This usually means a resignation after January 1 and before April. There may not be enough time to use the method mandated by Sec. 2.03, resulting in the position remaining vacant for several months, and the district without an alder. This ordinance proposes that, in such a circumstance, the Council President may seek a person who previously served on the Common Council or on the County Board and resides in the district, and seek appointment of that person to serve the short time until the election in April.
