Covid-19 Update

March 15, 2020 9:10 AM

March 15: There will be more updates about Covid-19 later today from Mayor Rhodes-Conway and public health officials.

In consultation with Alder Grant Foster and Parks Division staff, we cancelled the East Side Dog Park scheduled for Thu March 19.  Please let others know who might not see this. We will let you know when the meeting is rescheduled.

Stay tuned to my weekly D6 Items of Interest updates for news about essential and cancelled city meetings.

Thanks for all the emails with suggestions, questions, etc. Thanks for stepping up with mutual aid networks and fundraising.

You may have seen press reports from Madison365 about a community fundraising initiative:  "Seeded by a matching donation of $25,000 by the Meicher Family Foundation and a contribution of $25,000 from UW Health, UnityPoint Meriter and Quartz Health Insurance, a community collaborative has raised over $200,000 in just under 24 hours to assist families affected directly and indirectly by the coronavirus pandemic. The Boys and Girls Club of Dane County is acting as fiscal agent for the fund. Donations are being accepted on the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County website.  Saturday afternoon, Michael Johnson announced on Facebook that Dan and Patti Rashke of the TASC Family Foundation had pledged another $100,000."

Johnson said the funds will be managed by a committee of community members and aimed at five distinct areas of need:

1. Medical supplies for those who are impacted by this virus

2. Meals for kids due to school closures

3. Funds to distribute to local shelters in support of families and individuals in need

4. Funds to support college students who are in need of temporary housing and meals

5. Funds to support senior citizens who may need meals, transportation and medical assistance.

Updated Public Health Orders Include Limiting Gatherings at Places of Worship and Religious Gathering Centers

Saturday, March 14, 2020 - 3:55pm

On March 13, 2020, Public Health Madison & Dane County issued orders to stop mass gatherings of 250 or more people across the county to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This order has been updated PDF  to include places of worship and religious gathering centers of over 250 people, effective March 14, 2020 at 4:00pm.

"Limiting large gatherings of people is an important tool to prevent the spread of illness. We would like to thank all the places of worship who have taken measures to protect their patron's health and safety regardless of gathering size," said Janel Heinrich, Director of Public Health Madison & Dane County.

Public Health has statutory authority to protect the health of the community and could limit gatherings even more in the future.

At this time, for gatherings with fewer than 250 attendees, Public Health Madison & Dane County strongly recommends the following precautionary steps:

  • Older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions that are at increased risk of COVID-19 are encouraged not to attend (including employees);
  • Social distancing recommendations should be met (limit contact of people within 6 feet from each other for 10 minutes or longer);
  • Proper hand hygiene and sanitation available to all attendees and employees;
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

This is a rapidly evolving situation. For the latest information, visit the CDC's coronavirus website , the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website , or the Public Health Madison & Dane County coronavirus page.
