Alder Benford’s Updates

When did this damn pandemic change our lives?

October 31, 2021 11:53 AM

Hello Friends and Neighbors

I hope that you all are finding joy.  At times, it feels as if the pandemic has been in my life for years but in reality, around March 11th 2020, I left my office at the UW-Odyssey Project, and classes on campus to begin working from home. In searching for resiliency, I have repressed some memories since Covid-19 has become ingrained in our lives.  I recently came across this article which gave me a sense of what I pushed aside from a medical viewpoint.  How the actual disease spread, mutated and killed millions around the world, including family members of those that I serve.

https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/covid timeline#:~:text=On%20March%2011%2C%202020%2C%20the,swiftly%20spreading%20around%20the%20world

I suspect that in future research articles, let's say from 2030, there will be a series of documented historical events that will show how we evolved as a species to co-exist or died with this, and subsequent pandemics.  Knowing that many of you also has the deepest concerns for those that you love, throughout this pandemic, I worry most about our children, teens and young adults.  As I reflect on, what seems now, extraordinary privileges I had during these important stages of development, I pray for our next generations.  On homecoming weekend, it appeared to me that no matter how dangerous Covid-19 is, thousands of Badgers, perhaps some vaccinated, gathered in mass to test if beer and brats ward off killer viruses.

Throughout this pandemic, I have witnessed suffering, grief, and all the other traumas that vulnerable, marginalized people living in the City of Madison, endure, and have agonized for decades. Yet I have also witnessed tremendous acts of grace and love that inspire me daily.  So as I search for a new, certain to be elusive, normalcy- because of this horrific disease in our midst, I will always strive to offer compassion and hope to our most marginalized neighbors.  Our city budget process https://www.cityofmadison.com/finance/budget  is where we, as a collective city, can demonstrate that we (or at least 15 alder votes at times) also wants to offer compassion and hope for all the people living in Madison, regardless of income, zip code or race.  Please contact allalders@cityofmadison  to help guide us in what is most important to you.

Sending you all my best wishes and love

BB
