March 17 Snow Plowing Update
Forecasts show that Friday will be one more slippery, snowy travel day in Madison. Streets Division crews will be out, but everyone using the roads must plan for slow travel times throughout the entire day.
A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to begin around 7:00am and continue for the entire day and into the overnight hours.
If and when the snow begins to accumulate on the roads, plow trucks will be deployed to maintain the main thoroughfares, salting and plowing as needed. These routes are the roads around schools, hospitals, and the routes used by Madison Metro buses. Trucks will remain on these roadways for the duration of the storm as needed.
The warm temperatures we've enjoyed the past few days means the pavement temperatures will be high, and the snow will melt.
However, as the wet snow falls onto this warm pavement and continues to fall, it can create a wet, greasy road surface that can be slick.
All roadway users should be prepared to encounter slippery roads throughout the day on Friday, especially in residential areas. Keep in mind that residential areas are not plowed until there is three or more inches of snow on the roadways and the storm is at or near its end. Residential areas are also not salted.
When traveling on Friday, be sure to make good choices. Be slow. Be patient. Be alert. Allow for extra travel time so you can arrive at your destinations safely.
Streets Division crews will be monitoring the weather and the roadways. Operations will adjust as conditions require.
