Joint Statement on Police Violence

June 10, 2020 4:48 PM

Supervisor Elena Haasl (District 5) and I are in full support of protesters and the demands for a radical transformation of society that starts with abolishing police departments and replacing them with non-violent public safety departments. We have both joined protesters in the streets to pressure our colleagues on the Council and County Board to listen and act on the unaddressed white supremacy in Madison. Our society is broken in so many ways that we cannot address the climate crisis or any given issue without first addressing the system that will place the disproportionate harm on BIPOC. Please continue to write to your elected officials and our colleagues to let them know we need commitments to action now, not later. This week, I'll be posting another update with specific legislation being introducing to reduce the harm done by the Madison Police Department.

Statement from Supervisor Elena Haasl, District 5; Alder Max Prestigiacomo, District 8:

As representatives of the youngest and one of the most progressive districts in Madison and Dane County, we continue to stand in solidarity with the youth organizers and activists, leading the movement for liberation from oppressive systems. We stand with you in this fight to transform Madison into an equitable and compassionate community.

We are especially committed to decolonization within ourselves. Continually unlearning the foundations of white supremacy, and being actively anti-racist in our actions as coconspirators. We've witnessed within our political system how elected leaders use rhetoric coupled with little to no actions watered down by the police union. We are committed to the following:

  • Dismantling and abolition of police in favor of a non-violent community-oriented public safety department. Policing does not address the root cause of why crime is committed and is done so at the sacrifice of more black and brown lives. Reformism is not the answer; we've tried it time and time again--now is the time for abolition and rebuilding from the ground up.
  • Defunding from state-sanctioned violence and investment into the community, not cops. Investing in new violence prevention programs and social services that mitigate crime on their own is a more effective use of taxpayer dollars. New investments into affordable housing, education, healthcare, and wellbeing should be made to address the root causes of violence in our communities.
  • Harm reduction immediately. While black and brown lives are on the line, we must take steps to mitigate police violence now rather than wait for a committee to conclude months from now. We must demilitarize our police forces and take steps to reduce violence as soon as possible.
  • Using our platforms as local elected officials to call out injustice done by UW-Madison and all affiliates, including the UW-Madison Police Department. UW-Madison has a horrible track record when it comes to addressing white supremacy; we'll continuously push UW administrators to address unresolved issues on campus.
  • Finally, we will work with leaders and activists to elevate the voices of our BIPOC community.
