This proposal includes demolition of two buildings currently within the National Historic District. These two buildings are currently owned by Alpha Chi Sigma but are both vacant due to to health and safety reasons. The fraternity is currently in communication with the developer and the development proposal includes housing the fraternity and its operations in addition to 20 apartments.
The City Landmarks Commission voted on October 5th, 5-0 to "recommend to the Plan Commission that the buildings at 619 N Lake Street and 621 N Lake Street have very significant historic value based on architectural and historic significance as noted in the 2018 Langdon Neighborhood Character Study and property files at the State Historic Preservation Office, the significant integrity they retain, their status as contributing structures in the Langdon Street National Register Historic District, and their serving as a gateway to the Langdon Street National Register Historic District and therefore having prominence in the overall district." This is the strongest opposition the Commission could make in it's recommendation to Plan Commission, which will ultimately have the final decision.
Below are a few images of the current houses at 619-621 N Lake St as well as some renderings of the proposed development, named 'Alchemy Apartments.' Feel free to email me with any comments or concerns: district8@cityofmadison.com
