One of the many goals of the Madison Fire Department is to promote the health and fitness of our personnel and that of the community.  Recent research shows that rates of overweight and obese individuals in the fire service are higher than those found in the general public.   Traditionally, some occupational factors place firefighters at higher risk for weight gain, such as shift work, sleep disruption, and unhealthful eating patterns in the firehouse.  I am proud to say that these statistics don't pertain to the Fire Department staff here in Madison

This January, the Madison Fire Department, along with Firefighters Local 311, is "challenging" its personnel with a friendly competition that promotes "strength in numbers" by connecting civilian employees, command staff, and sworn (local 311) personnel with the goal of improved health and wellness.  The competition aims to promote teamwork, camaraderie, and healthful habits that can help transform lives and prolong careers.

The Fitness Challenge is a 12-week competition beginning with weigh-ins and initial assessments mid-January and ends mid-April.  Regardless of age or level of fitness, the Fitness Challenge provides special incentives to help participants achieve health and wellness goals.  I look forward to reporting the positive progress we make during this period.

In good health,
Chief Davis
