City of Madison Firefighters extinguished a fire that ignited from a lightning strike and caused $50,000 in damage.

An occupant of the three-flat apartment complex heard an explosion and called 911 around 6:00 pm.

When firefighters arrived to the 100 block of W. Wilson Street, they could see smoke from a third floor window. Occupants evacuated and were found outside.

The fire was contained to the subspace after the lightning had followed a pipe chase. Firefighters had to open walls and ceilings in order to extinguish the fire.

2nd and 3rd floor apartments suffered damage.

No injuries reported as a result of the fire.

Occupants will be staying with friends and family.
