2015: Navigating the Deep End of the Internet

You may have heard of the "Deep Web," "DarkNet," "Hidden Net," or "Invisible Web" but what exactly is it? Searching the Internet with most search engines can be compared to dragging a net across the surface of the ocean: a lot of information may be caught in the net, but the vast majority gets skimmed over and missed. If you've ever wondered about Tor and Onion Browsers, crypto-currencies, and the Silk Road this presentation is for you. This one-day course will cover an overview of "alternate" uses of the Internet, and how your current investigations may be affected. Case studies will be incorporated throughout the presentation to demonstrate how the "dark web" and other high-tech, Internet related concepts such as crypto currencies, hactivism, MMORPGs, and the Silk Road present themselves in current investigations. This course is targeted towards detectives, investigators, and prosecutors who want to have a better understanding of the less well-known areas of the Internet.
