2015: Strategies for Effective Child Field Interviews

Effectively speaking with children in the field who are victims or witness of crime is an essential function of law enforcement & child protection professionals. However, children are not simply smaller versions of adults; speaking with children in order to gain productive information requires knowledge, skills & abilities regarding child development, linguistics & language acquisition, & using narrative building approaches.

This training will explore in-depth the skills needed for first responders & others who are meeting & talking with children immediately following a report of abuse or who have witnessed a violent crime. Development, linguistics, current research, case examples, & coordination will be discussed. The training will be co-presented by national expert Julie Kenniston, Detective Kathleen Riley (Madison Police) & Jennifer Ginsburg (Safe Harbor.)
