Firefighters Battle Flames and Cold

January 28, 2014 11:11 AM

This morning at 6 AM when the temperature was -15 degrees, Madison Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at Windsor Building Systems located at 314 Atlas. The building is a total loss but crews prevented extension to other buildings on the property. Currently, there are 60 firefighters on the scene and they are working in 30 minute shifts due to the extreme cold conditions. Metro Transit buses are on site with warming buses to keep the firefighters warm between their shifts.

Not only is Metro Transit assisting, Engineering Division is working to make sure that there is a free flow of clean water into the storm sewers in these subzero conditions. Also, Streets employees are rotating fire trucks through their garages to thaw them out so that they can continue to operate. And finally, Fleet Services is onsite keeping the fire trucks operable in these subzero conditions.

Thanks to all these hard working employees for keeping us safe!
